"Ross, please pick up the phone. Emma hasn't stopped crying for the last hour! I am slowly losing the world to live". Rachel and Emma had just gotten home from visiting her family in Long Island. Ross had gone out of town for the weekend to do an intellectual talk for the Colgate university. It was three months after Rachel and Ross had broken up but they maturely decided to share custody of Emma. Although a two year old was oblivious and uneducated in the understanding of adult relationships, Rachel felt guilty and tried to make as much time for Emma as she could. With her job as senior manager at Ralph Lauren, it required lots of attention, much like Emma. Balancing a job and a child at the same time was a struggle for Rachel.
"Please Emma" Rachel begged as she held Emma close to her chest. Her head was resting on Rachel's shoulder. Rachel began to sing nursery rhymes but only aggravated Emma more. Just as Rachel let out a small moan, Ross walked through the door.
"Hi Emma!" He walks straight over to Emma and gingerly picks her from out of Rachel's arms.
"You are back, I thought you were staying until Monday", Rachel let out trying to avoid making eye contact.
"Well I heard your voicemail" Ross coughs "I mean voicemails"-
Rachel grunted. "You know, it'd be helpful if you rang me back, or, here is an even better idea, answered".
Ross begins to pace with Emma whilst whispering into her ear "Daddy's home".
"Look Ross, I just don't think this is working."
With Emma asleep in his arms, a moment passes where Rachel is questioning how he managed that. Ross lays Emma in her cot on the far side of the room.
"Look, its time we talked properly."
