I'm in Thunder Bay and she's back in Toronto and I think we're fighting about Japan. She's been up all night watching Al-Jazeera's online news coverage. I said that their economy would recover. She said that people's lives are in danger. We are two continents drifting apart. We met in Brampton and reconnected in our favourite Hong Kong restaurant in Toronto. She had taught in Osaka and I taught Canadians in Europe. We kissed. She vacationed in Paris, alone; I didn't want to go. I was miserable, working in beautiful Egypt. We visited Korea for twelve glorious days and Washington DC for eight awkward ones. We moved in together in Toronto for a year. She told me that she needed space in Wasaga Beach. I blamed globalization. I left for school in Thunder Bay, she went to work in Bali, and we thought we might try Toronto again. Already, I am sensing that the world is too small to be in love.
