"Is it true? Did I die saving Caleb?"
"Yes," Christina turned her head away, holding back tears. "They barely revived you. I was so scared, I thought we lost you."
"Uh, um, um, ugh," I stuttered. "How's everyone else? What do they think?"
"Well, Caleb thinks you died and he's been in the dormitory crying. Peter didn't care and Matthew feels guilty about the whole thing so he's sulking, too. Tobias, me, and Uriah are the only ones that know you're alive right now."
"Wait, Uriah?"
"Ya, long story, though. I'll tell you later."
"Fine."
Christina turned away to leave.
"Wait!"
Chris stopped and looked at me.
"What?"
"Uh..." I was at a lost of words. I had no idea what to do. I felt useless. "Um, I just wanted to know where they left the compound vehicles."
"Why?"
"Um, I just wanted to know where I can start to put my bags so I can get ready to leave with y'all when we have to leave back to the factions."
"Oh," she paused. "They're behind the compound. Go down the hall and exit the door that's there. They should be to your left."
"Ok, thanks."
"If you need help, come get me."
"Sure thing. Oh," I tried to keep my voice from breaking. "Tell To-Four I love him."
"K, later."
Then she was gone.
TOBIAS
Before I walked into the dormitory I heard two vaguely familiar voices. Nita and Matthew.
"They tell you the same thing? That we have to go, too?" I heard Matthew say.
"Yeah. How do you think it is in there? I've never experienced it before in person, I've always only observed." Nita, ugh, said.
"It's even more broken then before. You and I will be the only two alive by the end of it. Tobias and the others, with the exception of Tris, barely survived when it was whole. What makes anyone think they can last more than a few days in there now?"
"Don't mention Tris, I hate her. Anyway, Tris is weak and without the help of Four during her initiation she would've died. No question. If Four never helped her then her and her two recently deceased friends, Will and Al, would be burning in the depths of Hell along with Natalie and her idiot husband."
I couldn't take her anymore. I didn't like that someone who barely knows Tris is talking so horribly about her and the people she cared about.
"That's funny," I said, walking through the dormitory doors.
Nita and Matthew looked at me with cowering faces. After a few seconds Nita tried to look brave and intimidating by straightening up and hardening her glare.
"She hates you, too," I continued. "Not as much as I do, but hey, who cares? Hate is hate. But anyway, Tris is not weak, she's strong, stronger then you. She's so strong she would've made it through initiation without me. If she did die, though, it would've been because I fucked up or something. (A/N Sorry for language.) If we died I'd be the one in Hell, not her. She's my angel when she's alive so what makes you think she'd be anything other when she's dead?"
"She's killed people! People she loved!"
"She's only killed one person shes loved and that was Will, which, as I recall, was an accident. But you know what? At least she had and still has people that love her. You, Nita, are unlovable, no one loves you and no one ever will."
Nita's face was expressionless as she stormed out with Matthew trailing right behind her. After they left I started to gather Tris and my clothes so I could pack them.
I was ready to leave this place. This place was horrible. Filled with bad choices. I don't understand how I could've ever been cruel to Tris just because she had better genetics then me. I hated how I almost killed Uriah and I hated that we almost killed our population.
"Four! I need to talk to you."
I turned to see a very broken Tris walk through the door. Her eye was already fading from violet to a dark lavender. Her scratches were barely visible and she had a new wrap over her stomach. As she took a few more steps she stumbled righted herself quickly.
"What are we going to do when we get back to the factions?"
"Well," I said. "I was thinking we could go back to Dauntless with our friends and live there. We can clean the city and, maybe, get the factions back together or we can split up the area, like it is now, and build a nicer system that's different and less harsh and excel from there."
"What about Evelyn?"
"Already taken care of."
"How?"
"Well, you know that town we visited out there? In the country?"
"Yeah. Why?"
"I told Evelyn about it and she said she wanted to make a difference so want she did is she moved out there with all the factionless and they're rebuilding the part of the country that was destroyed."
"Wow."
"Yeah," I said staring into nothingness when I thought of something. "Tris?"
"Yes, Tobias?"
"Can you promise me that you will always think before you do now?"
"I'll try."
"Thank you."
She gave a quaint smile that made my heart leap out of my chest.
"Hey," she said. "I'm ready to go home now if that's okay."
"That's perfect."
Tris and I stood hand-in-hand and left the compound with our clothes, our little family, and Nita and Matthew.
Time for a new life with the love of my life.
