A Lost Mother

A giant tree stood in the middle of the room you ended up in. Leaves breaking off from each branch, falling down, then resting along with the others on the ground. Perhaps it's autumn here in the Underground...

You walked around, imagining squirrels and birds playing on the tree.

You accidentally stepped on a tiny twig hidden in the pile of dead leaves. Despite it's small size, it made a large CRACK! in the quiet chamber and you began wondering if anyone heard that.

Slow heavy footsteps trudged your way and you readied yourself for the worst case scenario. In your head, you could already picture another monster coming through the doorway at the end of the hall. Probably a soldier, or a vicious huntsman, or-

The light of the doorway was invaded by a huge shadow. The owner - a female goat monster that held an aura like that of a kind mother. You waited for your instincts to react, but nothing protested against the one before, so you presumed that it's safe... probably for now.

"Oh goodness! I never that another one would fall down here so sooner..."

Her voice, that bestowed a comforting tone, echoed throughout the hall and you straightened up, "I'm sorry! I was only trying to find someone..."

You tried letting your guard down this time.

You both were silent for a second before you saw her slowly approaching you. She stopped right in front of you. You then realized that your height was just the same level of her chest. She kneeled down and your eyes met. Somehow, somewhere deep inside, you suddenly had the urge to hug her. You resisted since you didn't want to creep her out or anything.

"Do not be afraid, my child. I am only Toriel, keeper of the ruins."

She began reaching, in a way as if you were just a fragile piece of glass that could break anytime. You leaned a bit, as her giant hands touched your face.

How soft and warm her hand felt. It reminded of a fluffy pillow and you were scared that you might fall asleep anytime soon. It was really no mistake that she was really like how a true mother would be to her child. Her touch proved that, and you felt it.

Then, like how a dream would appear to a sleeper, a wave of different scenarios came to you at once. It was happening again.

You witnessed the story of Toriel, how she had a family with her king, how happy they were. You also saw how devastated she was when they lost their only son and the human child she also came to love as her own. But her grief was not the only reason why she left the world she knew behind. When she found out what her husband planned to do with the fallen humans, she fled to the ruins.

With a kind heart, she tried to help those who also ended up getting stranded down here. But no matter what she did, each human would eventually leave and unfortunately get killed in the monster world. All she could ever do was grieve in silence, wishing deep within in your heart that she could've done more. And she did, to one human after the other. However, it always seemed like it was never enough.

You almost cried. You felt a hint of the weight upon her shoulders as she mourned for the children she came to care for, despite that they were part of the race that killed her child. But you stopped your tears, in order not to give her the wrong idea.

You wanted to tell her. You wanted to tell her that Asriel, somehow, is alive. But you were afraid. You didn't know why, but something told you that this was not the right time to tell her these things. The right moment will come, and all you have to do is wait patiently.
