CHAPTER 1
Another summer had passed by. It seemed only yesterday that Grace graduated as Valedictorian of her batch. The memories of her elementary years flashed to her mind as she prepared herself for the first day of high school.
She had prepared for high school since September last year, when she took the entrance exam to her dream high school. She was overjoyed when she had learned that she had passed the exam. She answered the questions of the interview with confidence and smartness.
She may seem all confident and ready for anything, but, she was still nervous for her first day of high school. In the some movies, high school seemed hard and rough, but in other movies, it seemed easy and filled with songs. Would she make a lot of friends? Would she still be ‘#1’? She didn’t know.
As she put on her new uniform, she said goodbye to her old school that gave her a lot of memories to cherish and hello to her new school that would lead her to a brighter future. She fixes her until it was nice and shiny for it was a new start.
The ride to her school was so long. It took them 1 hour and 30 minutes to get there. Her heart beat faster when they were about to approach her school. Was she ready? What if something goes wrong? Her mind was filled with negative thoughts.
She looked around at people while she walked to the assembly. She saw people who already had friends. She thought that they might be from the same schools. Some people were just hanging around and enjoying the view. And the other people seemed nervously walking towards the assembly, like her.
She went to her section to fall in line. She didn’t see anyone who seemed familiar. It was like she was lost in some other world. She wanted to say hi to everyone, but it just seemed awkward.
The principal started to talk. He told them to fix their crooked and wavy lines. Then, all of them suddenly moved to fixed their lines like robots. No one made a sound or said a word.
As they finished fixing their lines, the principal bid them “Good morning” and asked the 4th year students to lead them in the flag ceremony that morning. They started out with a morning prayer and ended with the pledge of allegiance. They went to their first period class with pace. No one was left behind. They walked in a straight line that never broke.
As they were about to enter Room 213, Grace thought that she saw Mark. She thought it was impossible since Mark stayed in their old elementary school. So she ignored the thought and just went straight to the seat nearest to Mrs. Fernandez, their Science teacher.
“Good morning, Class” Mrs. Fernandez said. The class suddenly said “good morning” simultaneously. They all sat down and Mrs. Fernandez started the discussion. They started out with a simple experiment. They were paired up. Grace was paired up with Nathan. He was taller than Grace by about 2 inches, he had light blonde hair and blue braces. They were asked to mix Nitric Acid with . Nathan accidentally poured ________ too quickly. The mixture exploded and burnt holes in all of their bags. Mrs. Fernandez brought Nathan speedily to the emergency shower to wash of some chemicals that could’ve attached itself to his skin. She told us to evacuate and..
Class Dismissed.
Grace ignored the announcement of dismissal and waited for Nathan outside the room. Nathan was soaking wet. Seeing Grace, he asked her if she could come with him to the lost and found. Mrs. Fernandez suggested that he should find some dry clothes there.
Hahaha.. Nothing better than being soaked wet by a teacher and borrowing some dry clothes for the 1st day, eh?
Not funny.. being soaked wet and borrowing clothes for the 1st day.
Grace was embarrassed. She was just trying to make small talk with Nathan but he quickly stops it. Grace didn’t think Nathan was the kind of guy that would to that though. Her first impression failed.
Then, Nathan chuckled.
I was just kidding, you know?
Grace, still unsure about this answers..
Kidding about what?
I was kidding about being mad and bitter.
Ohh.. well good then, but that was kind of mean though.
Hahaha.. c’mon cheerio.
They continued to walk to the lost and found. They entered a room with 2 to 3 people talking with each other sitting in a chair.
Um.. Hello.. is this the lost and found?
Grace asked. She didn’t know if it was the room.
Young girl, this is not the lost and found, this is the principal’s office.
Nathan, embarrassed and shocked that they didn’t notice it was, said.
Um.. sorry sir. We truly thought this was the lost and found. Could you please tell us where we could find it?
