With my rifle fastened to my back, helmet tightened and magazines secured to my combat vest, I climb onto the back of a military transport vehicle, ready to head back to camp. A sudden shake signalled that the truck was getting into motion.
"Okay, remember, get back, check your rooms, clean them even. And get prepared for a room inspection. Oh, and Priv-" Said the general, being abruptly cut off by an IED exploding...
Everything turned dark, it didn't seem real, had we really been blown up? Was I dead? I realised that the darkness was actually smoke created from the IED.
"Hello," I yelled, being choked by the possibly death inducing smoke, "is everyone okay?"
No response, I decide that it is definitely wise the get the fuck out of there... and be fast about it.
Climbing over presumably dead bodies, I see the door in the abyss, when in reality, it was 6 feet away. With one gigantic leap over Sergeant Phillips, I come face to face with the metal door. Dizzily, I pull the aluminium door towards me... no budging this door. So, logically, I begin to unscrew the doors off the hinges. 1st screw. 2nd screw. 3rd screw... you get the picture.
16th screw... all the hinges were off, and to my delight, the door pushed elegantly outside onto the desert's hardened sand floor. As I hopped out of that vehicle, the heat immediately pulsed my skin, I needed to get back to the base. As I looked back in that vehicle, the smoke had cleared, and I saw everything. To the leg falling off of Private Lennings... poor buddy, his daughter's only 3, and to Captain Spear... my boss, dead. It's a terrible sight. I move to the driver's seat at the front, this is where I gagged in disgust... the driver's head was falling off.
Whilst looking through the landscape to see which asshole had done this, I spot, very clearly, two men setting up another IED. Well, they won't get away with it again, I pressed my gun up to my shoulder, aimed carefully, and pulled my trigger at the IED. My plan had worked: my bullet caused the IED to go off, and it blew up those motherfuckers to kingdom come.
