Eyes

An ocean. That's the only way you could describe them. They were simply pools of blue. At times they were the deepest blue I've ever seen. I could stare for hours if I was allowed. They were the shade of the deep sea, staring into the calm, unexplored depths. This was early mornings and relaxing afternoons alone with him. These were quiet date nights or staying up late. They were whispered conversations and tentative hand holding.
Other times his eyes were fierce. They were bright. Like the Arctic Ocean. They had an icy surface that looked like the coldest water you'd ever feel if you plunged in. These were battles. These were shouted commands. They were his 'Captain' mode. They were also late nights when I refused to go to sleep. When I'd rather work than face a mere nightmare.
A tropical beach. The clearest water you've ever seen. They could be this too. The kind that was so bright and so blue you'd think it was a mirror reflecting a midday sky. The kind that reminded you of paradise. This was the happier times. This was experiencing something new. Laughing. Telling stories. These were gatherings with everyone- parties, game night, movie night... They were meeting a fan. They were reminiscing. They were my favorite.
But, sometimes they were dark. Like a stormy sea. The kind you'd look at and get concerned. They were cloudy and muddled with emotion. Like if you were to say the wrong thing they'd overflow. They were gloomy days. These were those rare moments when he'd cry. When he'd be the most vulnerable. He hated them and I did too. These were those days I'd swallow my pride to comfort him. They were nightmares. They were regrets.
Although, on some special occasions they sank into an azure shade that brings back memories of taking a yacht to a secluded place. Like a small private lagoon, but it was always so gorgeous. Amazed that you could call this spot yours... or those eyes. They were mine. I always noticed them when he'd glance my way in a crowded room. Whether at a gala or on the battleground. It was always some kind of reminder that he was there. They grew stronger, like some magnet as he would approach. I could play out the scene in my mind by memory. I'd be talking with someone and he'd notice me, excusing himself from whatever conversation he was in. He'd approach, not daring to break eye contact. Then he'd walk by me, his hand lightly brushing against mine. Other scenarios where these eyes would stare into mine were- well- private. They'd show right before he closed them to press his lips against mine. They'd show in a mischievous way when he took my hand to lead me to the bedroom. They show a different side to him that many don't see. And it may sound selfish, but they are mine.
"Tony?"
I stop myself. I must've been staring.
"Yeah?"
He looks at me, a smile on his face.
"You seemed distracted. Something on your mind?"
I shake my head, leaning back against the couch. I shift my attention to the television screen.
"No. Nothing really," I lie.
"You and I both know that's bullshit. There's always something on your mind."
"Language, Cap," I scold lightly with a chuckle.
He rolls those eyes and grabs my hand.
"Seriously though. What's up?"
I grin, catching myself lost at sea. I forgot the question.
I see his mouth moving, but no words seem to reach me. I'm too far gone and honestly I don't care if I drown.
I feel myself leaning forward, drawn to him like a magnet. I peck my lips against his cheek.
"Tony? Are you okay?"
"Mhmm. You know, I love you," I state with a nod.
His surprised expression shifts to a fond smile.
"I love you too," he replies.
I lay against him, staring dreamily up at him.
He leans down to kiss my forehead lightly, wrapping an arm around me.
"Tired?" he asks in an amused tone.
I shake my head, despite closing my eyes.
I feel him staring at me and just imagining that soft gaze sends me off to sleep.
