PROLOGUE
Violet leaned on the balcony and looked at the sky. She could still hear the heavy sounds of music from inside but chose to ignore it. It was Luke’s last night home then he was going to the college the next morning. Meanwhile, she will be starting her junior year next week. They were never separated for more than a day.
“Violet?”
She didn’t need to turn around to see who it was. She knew it was Luke. He walked over to her and leaned on the balcony too.
“What are you doing here? You should be enjoying your party.” Violet said.
“Well, I noticed you were missing so I went to look for you.” Luke answered.
They just stood there silently for a moment and looked at the stars. The stars twinkled brightly.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, it is.”
“I’m going to miss our stargazing nights.” Luke said.
“I’m going to miss you, Luke.” Violet said.
“I’m sorry I have to leave, Violet.” Luke pulled her into a hug.
“It’s okay. I guess it’s for the good of the company.” Violet hugged him back, absorbing his scent.
“How about we stop this sappiness and just go back inside and have fun? It is my last night, after all.” Luke suggested.
They pulled away from each other. Violet wiped the tears that she didn’t notice were already there. Luke held out his hand. Violet put her hand into his. Hand in hand, they went back to the party. They danced and had fun the whole night.
The next morning, Violet woke up very early. She wanted to cherish the last hours with Luke before he leaves. She gets out of bed and gets ready very quickly. She goes to the dining room. Luke was the only one there. She quickly takes the seat beside him.
“Where’s Papa?” Violet asked, referring to Luke’s grandfather.
“He left early. He has a breakfast meeting with some potential investors.” Luke answered.
“Oh. Was he able to say goodbye?”
“Yep, right before he left.”
“What time are you leaving?”
“Nine-thirty.”
They ate breakfast and just hung out together until Luke’s ride came. When it came, Violet hugged Luke tightly.
“I’ll miss you. Call and text me whenever you can.” Violet said.
“I’ll miss you too. I will.” Luke promised.
They hugged for the last time. Luke got into the car and waved. Violet waved and just stood there as the car got farther and farther.
