This is really awkward, me and Mark are three inches apart while walking side by side down the sidewalk. I could feel my blood rushing up to my cheeks.
I was about to speak when Mark interrupted me, “So, uhm, what does your house look like?”
I was relieved that he was the first one to start a topic.
“Oh, well, I bet you've already seen it since my house is the only house in this village that is painted in light green.” I chuckled.
He laughed, “Oh! So that’s your house? I always like to look at your house.”
“O-oh,” I stuttered. “Why so?”
“Well, because light green is one of my favourite colours and when I look at it I feel alive because the colour is so invigorating to look at. Since the houses here are usually coloured brown or the usual white, your house stands out the most.” Mark blushed, probably realizing he has said too much about my house and how he admires it so much.
“Wow! I never thought someone would admire my house so much.” I joked.
He rubbed the back of his neck and pressed his lips together, trying to stifle his laugh.
“So Mark, tell me more about yourself. Like :what are your hobbies, why did you volunteer for the orphanage, why are you so shy, why don’t I see you usually around the neighbourhood?”
“Am I supposed to answer all of that?” He smirked.
I raised my eyebrows, “Yes, yes you must.”
He started, “Okay then, I like playing the guitar and reading books. I volunteered because I like kids and helping them. I’m naturally shy, I think. You don’t see me often because I’m a homebody, and you’re probably wondering why I don’t have a car. It’s because I just don’t want to have a car.”
He was right, I was wondering why he didn’t have a car. I mean, I’m not bragging but you can’t buy a house in this village if you don’t have money if you know what I mean. People that live here have high paying jobs, like politicians.
I shrugged, “Yeah, I was wondering about that. I mean, you’re like seventeen and teens in this neighbourhood who are seventeen have cars already. Okay, I know what you’re thinking. I am not a gold-digger; I’m just a curious person. And for the record, I don’t have a car either.” I gave him a proud look.
Yup, I do not have a car because dad insisted on buying me a car after college! Can you believe it? I’m kinda used to his strictness by now, but at least I already have my driver’s license so I’m kind of contented even though I don’t have a car yet . I argued with him for a whole month, but he said, ‘Honey, it will attract you bad friends! When they find out you have a car, they will be like bees swarming over you and asking if you could take them home!’ My dad has a point, I know.
