Light peered into the room, waking the previously sleeping Flug. In a state of confusion, he looked at the digital clock on the table beside him. When he realized it was noon, he jumped up and got ready as quickly as he possibly could. Right before he stepped out of the room, he noticed that he wasn't wearing any paper bags, or goggles.'Whoa, that was really close...'
Flug turned back around and put on his bags and pair of goggles. Now he was ready. He rushed over to his lab, hoping not to be seen by anyone. Luckily, he succeeded. He quickly got back to work on the invention he was currently being tasked with, trying to make up for lost time. The ray was used to have the enemy encased in a vision of their worst fear, having them temporarily immobilized while the effects were taking place, and hopefully shaken up when it wore off.
He had been working on it for a few days, and the loss of hours definitely slowed down progress. Flug was almost done, around... Seventy-five percent. He just needed to build the ray itself, he had the chemicals needed to produce such an effect, but not the rest. He had the hard part out of the way.
He was putting a few of the pieces into place when Black Hat burst into the room, yelling,
"IT'S BEEN FOUR DAYS! IS IT FINISHED YET?!"
Flug nearly jumped out of his skin, almost dropping what he was working on. Regardless, he answered.
"A-Almost sir! I just n-need to build the rest of it."
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN 'THE REST OF IT'?"
"W-Well... I have the chemicals necessary... I just need to b-build the actual... T-Thing you hold."
"WELL HURRY UP!!"
And with that, Black hat left, closing the door behind him. No further questioning, no anything.
'Well... That was easier than I thought it was going to be.'
He continued working, like nothing had happened. He stopped when he got extremely hungry all of the sudden. He remembered that apple he took a few bites of the previous night. He groaned and glanced at the door, mentally asking himself if it was worth taking a break from working. Flug decided to make a small amount more, and then go sneak off to the kitchen.
He was really nervous, for no odd reason. Disregarding the night before, he hadn't stepped foot in that kitchen in what felt like forever. When he got there, it was only 5.0.5 in the kitchen. He put one of his gloved fingers up to where his mouth would be. The bear simply nodded, and continued cleaning something that Dementia probably broke. He decided on a simple granola bar, something he could eat while working. He hurried back to his lab, hoping not to run into anyone else.
His luck ran short when he stopped in front of none other than his boss. He was the last person Flug wanted to run into at the moment.
"What are you doing?"
"I-I was just.. Getting some food.."
"Alright, get back to work."
A short encounter, yes, but it was definitely nerve-wracking for the scientist. Once past Black Hat, he ran back to the safety of his laboratory. He unwrapped the bar and continued to make the ray while eating. About ninety percent done. Excited about finishing, he hurried, but careful not to mess up.
Soon enough, it was done. For once, Flug was proud, he hoped his boss would be too. He walked over to Black Hat's office, with the ray in hand. He reached up to knock on the door, but hesitated.
'What if he doesn't like it? What if I made a mistake? What if it doesn't work?!'
Flug pushed those terrifying thoughts to the back of his head, and knocked.
"What do you want?!"
"T-The device is finished, s-sir."
"Well what are you waiting for?! Come in!"
He entered the dark office room. Black Hat was sitting in his chair, looking bored.
"Well? What does it do?"
"It.. Puts you in a sort of trance, seeing your worst fear, and immobilizing you. It's a sort of... Distraction?"
It sounded a lot worse out loud than it did in Flug's head. His boss stood up, and walked over.
"Let's see it then."
The scientist knew what Black Hat was asking, and gave him the ray. After inspecting it for what seemed like ages, the demon aimed and shot at Flug.
A bright light flashed... But nothing happened. Black Hat pressed the trigger a few more times, getting more impatient by the second.
"..."
'Oh no.. Nononono... This can't be happening...'
"Why won't this thing work?!"
The now annoyed demon glared at Flug. He could feel himself shaking. Those doubting thoughts were right. He'd messed up before, but not this badly.
"First I give you a break, and now this?! What has gotten into you?!"
"I'm s-sorry..."
And with that, Flug broke down in tears. He should've saved them for the next thing his boss said.
"Get out. You're done. This is the last straw."
This was the last thing he wanted his boss to do, he loved his job. Flug stared at the demon in sheer disbelief. He couldn't believe it.
"GET OUT I SAID!!"
Defeated, he stood up, and ran out of the office crying. He was devastated. He made his way to the laboratory that wasn't his anymore, and packed some of the stuff that was his. Then, he went to the bedroom that was not his anymore, and packed the rest of his things, and walked in tears to the exit. He was living his worst nightmare.
...
Then he woke up.

What a twist!
I'm SUPER sorry I didn't have the chance to update until just now! It was the Fourth of July, and my sister's birthday yesterday, then my mom's birthday today. I wrote a long one because I skipped yesterday. Hopefully, this won't happen for the rest of the week. Can't say the same about the weekends though. Oh, and look at this! I got 1000 words finally!
