Chapter 8 - Conspiracy

Mr Wilson didn't stop talking. He kept going on and on, form stretching on forever. The bell did eventually save us from his non-stop tyranny. Thrilled that I've got Geography, I skip off down the hall. After my progress with Brad on Saturday, I'm excited to see if we've become better friends.

I hop on up to 409 and open the door to find Mr Watson standing behind the front desk. I smile towards him and make my way over to my seat next to Brad.  I sit down next to him, unpacking my bag, whilst he talks to a girl.

The girl looks me up and down whilst I quietly take out my things.

" And who are you?" She questions me. She glares at Brad, "I thought you didn't sit next to anyone in Geography, let alone a girl?" She aggressively swings her hair over her shoulders.

I stutter at her displeasure for me, trying to string together a sentence.

Brad talks over my incoherent babbling. "Sara she's new, only moved here a few weeks ago. The seat was the only spare one left, just happened to be next to me." He shrugs his shoulders. "Don't worry we're not really that close friends, she's better mates with Connor and the boys than me."

The girl's glare lowers on Brad and instead sharpens on my shaking face. She then ignores me and focuses back on him.

I tune out the rest of their conversation; pondering over Brad's words. He doesn't think of me as a friend? But we've improved so much in our interactions. He even met some of my family! I sink further down in my seat, sulking over the previous actions.

I hear the bell chime and watch as Sara leaves the room. Before she exits she waves to Brad, blowing him a sickening smooch. I eye him as he waves back but does not reciprocate the air kiss. He turns back to me once she's left and I go back to my salty slouch.

"Umm..." Brad pauses, not sure on what to say.

"I didn't know you had a girlfriend." I try to say indifferently but my tone comes out bitter.

"Uh yeah," Brad says, scratching the back of his neck. "Sara and I've been together for a couple of months." He looks at me warily. "Are you okay?"

"Yep, I'm fine, just tired. It is a Monday after all." I joke, hoping my light heartedness will sway him from the topic.

"Oh. You sure you seem a bit pissed off," Brad asks.

I stare at his face. Waiting for him to smirk and say some ludicrous statement about how I'm jealous. "I'm fine" I state, clipped.

I turn away and begin to take down the notes that Mr Watson has written on the board, knowing that Brad is unsure of my mood.

We stay in our awkward bubble for the whole of the lesson. Neither one of us wanting to put in the effort to start up a conversation. I knew that any attempt at an interaction would just end in the abrupt manner exuded before.

When the signal rings out I bolt from my seat and make my way down to English: leaving Brad behind.  As I make my way down the corridor I feel a tug on my backpack.

I spin round to be faced with Sara. Her lips pulled up in a plastic smile and her eyes boring into mine.

"Hi Emma, I'm Sara, Brad's girlfriend. I just wanted to tell you that seeing as you're new here, I'd be happy to show you around. You see Brad's a very busy man so he doesn't have the time to court you around the area but I have a lot of spare time. You know, we don't want to distract Brad from his studies now do we?" The girl before me says. Her voice so high and sweet that just hearing it caused bile to rise in my throat.

Just as I shake my head I feel a hand wrap around my forearm.  I look to see Lucy standing beside me. She gives me an encouraging smile.

"You alright there Sara, how's your boyfriend doing?" Lucy asks her with a large smirk on her face.

"Just fine, thank you very much." She grits through her teeth. "I was just telling Emma that I could show her around, seeing as her new buddy Brad is a busy, busy man."

Lucy nods her head, the smirk still ever present. "Her name is Emily, just so you know. And I suppose he is as he's dating you." She remarks.

"And what's that supposed to mean?"Sara demands.

"That he spends it all on satisfying your high maintenance arsey attitude," A masculine voice aside me says. Connor squeezes my shoulder in an affectionate form of reassurance.

Sara stares dumbfounded at Connors outlandish comment. "Well, he won't want to be friends with you once he hears about this verbal abuse!" She squeals as she storms off.

"Or maybe he'll realise how much of a fake hag you are!" Lucy calls out after her.

Connor pulls me along towards the English room, Lucy following. We settle into our usual seats and Connor and Lucy look at me expectantly. I huff, knowing they want me to spill.

"Basically," I start off. " She came into Geography and got pissy over the fact that I was sitting next to Brad. I think she thinks that I want to go out with him."

Connor nods. "She's like that with every girl he looks at."

"Yeah, she's a massive bitch about it," Lucy adds. "She's so much of a slut she thinks that everyone else is too. That we're all just slags for Brad when in actuality we're not all crazy about him."

Connor tuts at Lucy's use of language but I focus on her rambling.

"Like, not everyone here is obsessed with him. Not every girl here is straight. She doesn't give a fuck if it was a boy talking to him, even if they were gay. I think she just has a thing for girls and tries to avoid admitting it by isolating herself from them with Brad." Lucy finishes.

"You know," Connor joins. "I reckon you'd make a really persuasive conspiracy theorist."

"Why thank you," Lucy responds. "It's my one defining quality."

I nod and laugh with her, trying to seem interested, when in fact all I'm thinking about is Brad: and Sara.

~ AN: Sorry for the filler chapter, hope it was somewhat dramatic or interesting. Next chapter, on Saturday, might be a bit similar but Sunday's one is going to be a bit more intriguing. Thanks for reading ~
