Wade landed on top of Grace as they fell across the threshold onto the porch. He had no intention of releasing her, however; he recognized instantly that he was screwed. So he might as well get a few last points across to Grace while he could.
The police reacted immediately, running up to the pair and pulling Wade off of Grace. They yelled at him not to resist and he released his hold of her. Suddenly putting his hands in the air and then laying face down on the ground as he was told to do. He allowed himself to be cuffed as Grace slowly sat up with the aid of a female officer.
Wade turned his head to look at her. He was staring with a pure hatred. Grace didn't care anymore if he saw her cry; she was just so exhausted. She let the tears start flowing down her face. She could vaguely hear the officer talking to her, but she was feeling detached from her body – wholly focused on Wade's eyes on her. He smirked and she came around as she tried to focus back in on the words the officer was saying.
"Honey, we have paramedics here... they want to have a look over you. Are you okay?"
Grace shook her head, then switched to a nod before pointing back towards the door.
"Tim... Tim needs help... His head..."
The officer, Officer Neilsen by looks of her name badge, patted her on the back and looked up to call out to the paramedics "Inside!" She called out. "There's someone hurt inside!"
The medics picked up their bags and ran past Grace and Officer Neilsen. Grace looked up, fresh tears slowly streaming from her eyes, her voice croaked as she asked Officer Neilsen "Is he going to be okay? Tell me Tim is going to be okay!"
The officer took her by the shoulders and looked her straight in the eye. "They're doing the best they can." She then took the liberty of wrapping her arms around Grace and giving her a hug. Grace broke down into full on sobbing.
Inside, the paramedics quickly assessed the scene. Immediately obvious was the fact that this man had at minimum a head wound.
"Knox, check his vitals!" the officer in charge said. "I'll deal with his bleeding."
They quickly moved to where they needed to be to do their jobs appropriately, the EMT having come in to assist moved to push the coffee table out of the way.
The medic named Knox looked up after a moment to inform his superior that Tim's breathing was slow, but steady. ... "Heart Rate and Blood Pressure low as well," he stated after a few moments before giving him a briefing of the numbers.
"Looks like he's lost a decent amount of blood," the OIC stated, "but he's no longer actively bleeding – that's a plus." He bandaged up Tim's head carefully while he told the EMT to run out to the ambulance for a stretcher. "We'll need to do spinal precautions as well," he said "so bring the back board and C-Collar as well."
"Sure thing," the EMT stated as he ran out of the door.
The medics carefully put his collar on him and rolled him onto the backboard, trying to do a quick assessment for any further injuries as they did so. "Looks like he's got several bumps and bruises at the minimum," Knox said. "Doesn't appear to have any breaks, but we'll have to give him a more thorough assessment in the ambulance."
Tim groaned as they strapped him in the stretcher.
Knox said "Well, he's responding to pain; that's good." then he told the EMT to place an IV port once he was in the ambulance. "We'll need to run some fluids and give him some pain relief in case he wakes up.... Set up the oxygen as well," he added.
They pushed the stretcher out onto the porch and maneuvered it over the steps. Grace called out to ask if Tim was okay, then turned to Officer Neilsen and asked if she could go with him.
"We'll take you there soon – you need to get checked out as well – but for right now I need you to stay and give your statement. We need to know what happened here."
Wade was lowering into the back of the Police Cruiser he looked back to smirk again at Grace. He called out to her "See you later, babe." As if it was a normal good bye after a date or a phone call. As if nothing bad had happened.
"What's going to happen to him?" She turned to ask Officer Neilsen.
Noting the panic in her voice, Officer Neilsen patted her shoulder and told her "Don't worry, Grace, we will protect you."
Grace looked at Officer Neilsen like she had grown two heads and snorted. Yeah, Right...
