*Chapter 6*
Alice pushed open the door to the dance studio. A few of the older girls were still in the waiting room, packing up to head home for the night. They gave her friendly smiles, and slight nods as she passed. The lights in the office were off, so she guess Mrs. Marie had gone home as well. The door to the dance room was closed, but Alice could see a beam of light coming from the small gap below the door. She pulled it open, and stepped through, pulling the door shut behind her. Sehun was over by the stereo, messing around with the music. He drummed on the table to a beat that Alice couldn’t hear. He didn’t look up until she tossed her bag onto the bench at the side of the room.
“Oh Hey, I was wondering when you’d get here. I was looking up songs that we could maybe use for the auditions. I have a few I’d like to show you, and maybe we could try to start something tonight. I even practiced those ballet moves and I kind of stitched some hip-hop into them.” His face was beaming. Alice could tell in that moment that dancing was Sehun’s passion, his life’s dream. She laughed softly as she walked over to him.
The back of his neck glinted with sweat, probably from the class he was just teaching. Since Mrs. Marie had already gone home, he was the only person left to teach a class. He seemed to be in a good mood too, so it was most likely a hip hop class.
A song with a slow but heavy beat came on the speakers. The bass vibrated the walls and shook the picture frames. She didn’t recognize the song. It definitely seemed like a song Sehun liked, because it was slow at certain points, but it sped up quickly, then slowed down fast. The rhythm was nice and Alice started shifted her shoulders and swishing her hand to the beat.
“This is a Korean song, so I don’t know how everyone is going to like it, but if we dazzle them with our kick-ass dance moves, they will be too speechless to say anything,” he told her, walking over to the middle of the floor and stretching out his arms.
“What’s it called? I honestly haven’t heard of any Korean bands before.”
“The song is called Symptoms. It’s by a band called Shinee. They trained in the same building as us. The song is about really deep passionate yearning for a lover. The person is in physical pain when he thinks about losing the person he loves. So we should pass the song around that.”
She nodded. She had never really paid attention to famous singers before, but she really liked these guys. She watched Sehun as he thought up some dance moves. He pulled her onto the floor to try a few steps. After an hour they had a few bits and pieces of the dance already figured out. Alice liked this particular part at the very beginning of the dance, where he was slumped over, knees bent, on stage all by himself like he was sulking. They planned it out so that when she walks over, she would put her hand on his back and the music would start. During the five beats at the beginning of the song, she would pump her arm at the same time that he would pump his chest and slowly lift up, as if she was pumping life into him.
They practiced for a while, the arms of the clock quickly ticking by without Alice noticing. They had the first 30 seconds of the dance completed but they still had some bits and pieces to fix.
It was getting late, and Alice was getting anxious to head home, but Sehun was determined to finish the part they seemed to be having the most trouble on. After the first chorus, Alice was to grab Sehun’s hand, jump into him, chest to chest, lean her weight on his chest and stomach with her legs bent then he was to propel her back off of him. But she couldn’t get a good hold on him and kept slipping off.
