I was young. So young. I had just turned 18 actually. A complete mess, to say the least, but thought I had it all figured out. I lived alone in a tiny, shitty apartment, although not by choice. My mother and father both left when I was young, and my grandparents died a year ago, grams went first, gramps a week later. I always wanted to find love like they had.
I spent most of my time at school or work, usually struggling with one or the other, just depending on what week it was. 40 hours here, 40 hours there. I juggled them both and constantly stressed about which one I could afford to lose more hours of, just so I could get a little more sleep. School typically lost, considering I didn't need nor want to be homeless, which in the end, only caused me to lose even more sleep, worrying about how i'd make up the hours I missed.
It wasn't until my senior year was almost over that I met Hazel. I never realized how much someone could take the world off my shoulders. Even if just for a moment. Someone so small had the power to make the darkest of rooms feel like sunshine at dawn. Peaceful and serine, yet so bright.
And then I saw the way he looked at her.
