as millie brown, the not-so-popular girl, opened her locker in the crowded high school hallway, she was taken aback when a paper fluttered its way to the ground. she looked around at the crowds of people too lost in their conversations to even notice, so she bent down, retrieving the small piece of paper. she was hesitant before opening it, figuring this was just another prank from the guys in her class. they were always finding new ways to trick her.

her hands shook slightly as she opened the note, her eyes widening in disbelief as she read the words in her head.

Meet me behind the school after last period. i've been waiting to do this for a long time. please, just trust me.

- f.w.

she stared down at the messy handwriting, shaking her head slowly as she reread each word carefully. what? she didn't even know who 'f.w.' was. she looked around confused, starting to believe that this was all a mean joke. of course it was.

she started mentally thinking of the initials 'f.w.' and who they could belong to. she had one boy in mind, but she immediately skipped over the possibility. it wasn't him.

she went through the day in anticipation for the final bell to ring. she debated telling sadie- after all, they were best friends. but sadie being the blabber-mouth she is, she wouldn't waste a second to tell the first person she saw.

millie found herself not being able to pay attention during her classes like she normally would. she was trying to figure out whether or not it was worth going after school. what if this was all just to humiliate her? the idea that behind the school there would just be a huge group of boys laughing at her taunted her for the rest of the day, but her gut was telling her she had to go. something like this had never happened to her, and she really did love mysteries.

her elbow was rested on the wooden desk, her face rested in her palm. her eyes, which she didn't even know she had closed, snapped open when the school bell rang. the final bell.

everyone rushed out of the room, but she hesitated a few seconds. she slowly stood up and reached for her bag when she was shoved forward.

"watch where you're going, sweets," a girl with long brown hair said as she walked past. a big, fake smile was plastered on her glossy lips. she then sashayed out of the room, flipping her hair as she did so.

millie shook it off. she was used to this by now. everyone treated her awfully, and she still never knew why, but now it's apart of her everyday life.

she made her way towards the back exit of the school where not many people exited from. she walked with her hands wrapped tightly around her backpack straps, her knuckles turning white from the tight grip. she bit her lip to the point where it could start bleeding any second, but she couldn't think of any of that right now. all she could think about was the mystery person behind the school.

she stopped in her tracks when she reached the side of the building. she stood behind the corner, knowing that as soon as she walks out and turns, the mystery person will be in plain sight. it took everything in her not to turn back around and to forget this ever happened. she took every ounce of courage left in her and stepped out, looking in the direction where the person would be. she felt herself go light-headed at the sight.

a tall boy with dark curly hair stood against the brick wall, his leg bouncing nervously as he moved his hands around in the pockets of his jean jacket. his sunglasses covered his eyes, but it was easy to tell that he was nervous.

millie slowly walked over, her grip loosening on her bag. her legs felt like jelly as she walked, but she tried to ignore the unfamiliar feeling.

"f-finn? finn wolfhard?" she asked as she approached him, her voice shaky.

"millie... y-you came," finn let out a heavy breath, as if he's been waiting to do so for minutes now. he pulled himself off the wall, taking a step closer to millie.

she was in shock. what was one of the most popular guys in school doing behind the school with a girl like her?

"listen, finn, you seem like a nice guy. but if this is all just some big joke, o-or something to embarrass me, please just do what you have to do to get your laughs and go," she said, not daring to make eye contact with him.

he slowly removed his sunglasses, holding them down at his side.

"i'm not doing this for laughs, millie," he lowered his voice as he looked down at her.

"i know all of you guys pick on me. make fun of me behind my back. it's no secret..." she trailed off, not wanting to finish. she shook her head, looking up at his eyes for the first time. his beautiful dark brown eyes.

"well some things don't deserve to stay secret," he said quietly.

"what?" millie shook her head, furrowing her eyebrows, "none of this makes sense, finn."

"i know, but..." he sighed, "it's all starting to make sense to me now. one of those things being us."

the last thing finn saw was millie's confused expression before his lips crashed into hers. he pulled her in tightly, not breaking away from the kiss. after a few seconds, millie pulled away, a confused expression still on her face. this time, however, a small smile was playing on her lips.

"since 6th grade i've been keeping the secret that i've liked you so much it's driven me crazy," finn shrugged, a smile spread across his face, "but now i guess it's not so secret."
