Unlucky

Everyone has either met or heard of that one person who is so unlucky it’s not funny.  Well, my name is Lucille Dawn, and unfortunately that person is me.

It all started when I was four. I was playing with my new doll, when all of a sudden, the doll exploded into flames. Our house ended up burning down and we had to move. The next year I was riding my tricycle down the street, when my neighbor’s dog, a Rottweiler I might add, decided it was time to play tag. I was the one being chased.

“RINGG,” The bell snapped me out of my daydream. I got up and stuffed my journal in my backpack and quickly ran out of the classroom wanting to get to lunch to satisfy the growling beast I called my stomach. I slowed to a fast walk when I passed by Mrs. Jakes door and then sped back up to a sprint. I pushed open the cafeteria door and walked in, not noticing the big yellow sign that said, “CAUTION, WET!” I felt my legs slip from underneath me, and heard my butt make contact with the multicolored tile ground. For a moment it was all quiet, and then a huge wave of laughter met my ears.

If this was my first time falling on my butt, I would probably be extremely embarrassed, but instead I looked up from the tile pattern and smiled at everyone. Then I got up and made my way to my lunch table. Before I even sat in my seat I was attacked by a bear hug.

“Oh My GOSH! Are you okay?! All they did was laugh, that is so mean! No one helped you up!” screamed Jade, my best friend in the whole entire world.

“I’m fine, you know that’s not the first time I’ve fell on my butt before!” I said and then laughed. Jade always overreacted in times like this, but that’s what I loved about her.

“I know, I know… It’s just that they didn’t even help you, and didn’t you see the sign, I’m pretty sure it’s bright yellow for a reason, Lucky.” She replied. Everyone called me Lucky as a joke, they all knew I was really unlucky, I mean who wouldn’t have noticed my unluckiness, especially after the talent show last year.

I sat down at the table and stole one of her fries, suddenly remembering I was extremely hungry.  She tried swatting my hand away, but I was too quick.

“Still stealing fries I see, but no worries Jade I bought Lucky a sandwich after seeing her fall on her butt,” said a deep voice from behind us. I quickly turned around and ran at the person while screaming, “CHARLIEE!” I tried tackling him to the ground, but he was ready and instead I ended up giving him a big hug. His chest rumbled with laughter at my attempt and soon was hugging me back.

“Geez, I was only gone for two days, and it’s not like you didn’t call me every minute of every day!” He said. Charlie had gone to visit his Grandma, who was in the hospital because of a fractured hip.

“I didn’t call you every minute of every day,” I said loudly, but then mumbled, “Only every time I saw a phone.” I had said it really quietly, but Charlie still heard. I mean it’s like he can hear everything, but come to think of it my whisper is really loud. He laughed, and said, “Your mom told my mom, that she even hid all the phones in the house from you!”  That was no surprise, my mom told Charlie’s mom everything, I mean they are best friends, which is why it’s no surprise that Charlie is my best friend, no scratch that, he’s like my brother.

The rest of school passed quickly, with me breaking the sharpener in class, and then making it catch on fire, causing the sprinklers to go off, and school to end early. I got a ride home from Charlie, and then said goodbye, watching him park his car in the garage of the house next door, which he did every day. As I walked up the steps I thought about what I would tell my mom when she asked me the daily question, which was, “How was your day?”

I walked through the door and heard her question. “Well, Mom,” I answered, “Today has just been a normal day in the unlucky life of Lucky.”
