Chapter 2~
The drive to campus takes a total of about twelve hours. I didn't plan on leaving until later today, but I guess it's not bad to be getting on the road earlier. After a quick stop at McDonald's for some breakfast, I was on my way.
The trip went smoothly and I was just about an hour away when my piece of shit truck started smoking and groaning.
"Fuck.." I mumbled under my breath, pulling over to the shoulder. I climbed out and lifted the hood, checking to see if anything looked wrong. The only problem is, I don't know shit about cars. Seconds away from giving up and calling for assistance, a red car pulls up beside me.
"Hey, do you need some help?" A cute boy says as he climbs out of his vehicle.
"Um.. please?"
He smiles at me and walks to where I'm standing beside my truck. After a quick inspection of it, he closes the hood and smiles a sad smile down at me. "There's not really anything you could do for it. It's just old." he pauses, walking around me and heading to the bed. "And it'd honestly be more of a hassle to you to get it repaired. Where you headed to?"
I tell him my destination and it turns out he's actually going to the same place. He insisted that he'd drive me there and the next thing I knew, I was sitting in the passenger seat of a total strangers car with all of my belongings stacked in the back seat.
"So, I never really properly introduced myself. I'm Liam.. And you are?"
"Katherine."
"A beautiful name for a beautiful girl." He says as he smiles at me, a blush creeping onto my cheeks at his compliment.
"Thank you." I return his smile. "So what's your major?"
"I'm actually going for a teaching degree for Language Arts. Grade level 9-12. What about you?"
"English major. I'm not really positive what I want to do yet, but I'm hoping to get an internship where I can read or write something. It's my passion."
"That's the same with me. And it's also the reason why I chose the major I did." He smiles to himself as he rounds a corner. "I want to encourage teenagers to read. Its such a wonderful escape, yanno?"
"Yeah, I get what you mean. I'm actually writing my own book at the moment. A Language Arts teacher I had in tenth grade helped me to love reading and encouraged me to write constantly and it's like an addiction to me now. I write and read any time I'm free."
He laughs and agrees.
We carry on the conversation like this for the rest of the drive. We have so much more in common besides our love for reading and writing. We both listen to the same music and love the same movies. Our inspirations were even somewhat the same: past teachers, certain family members, even some famous writers. In such short time, I feel as though I already know him so well. I'm so glad to have made a friend before even stepping one foot on campus.
And he's so sweet too! When we received our schedules and dorm information, he helped me bring all of my belongings up to my room before even considering heading over to his. He left me at my dorm so he could go situate his room a bit, so I decided to do the same. My roommate has yet to arrive, so I set up everything on my half of the room so when she did show up, there'd be no controversy. I had just finished unpacking my room when Liam came back, a smile on his face.
"So, I was wondering if you wanted to watch a movie?" He asked, holding up The Dark Knight Rises.
"I'd love to." I laugh, grabbing the case from him and inserting the disc into my laptop. We both climbed onto my bed and lay on our stomachs to watch the movie.
By the time it finally ended, Liam was snoring lightly beside me and I couldn't help the smile that grew on my face when I looked over at him. Out of all the people to have found me pulled over on the side of the road, I'm glad it had to be him. I lay my head down on my pillows and pull the covers on my side up and over my body after placing a blanket over him.
Looks like my fresh start isn't off to such a bad beginning after all.
