I am a girl, thus I am not Rick Riordan. All books in the PJO and HOO fandoms belong to him.
Unfortunately, this is something that happens way too often in PJO fanfics. People want their character to have cool powers, but can't decide which ones to give to their character. This normally results in an extremely overpowered character that is virtually unkillable.
Either that, or they really love a character who's already pretty OP (Take Percy, for instance) and want to give him/her a truckload of new cool powers (A good example is turning Percy into an air and fire-bending werewolf with telepathy, unlimited mind control, and the power to see into the future. Something that isn't an example is giving Percy wings or a tail, turning him into some sort of non-mythical creature, or giving him some sort of small power that brings some pretty interesting results, like limited control over colors or light.)
I've had problems like this before too, but how do you resolve it?
1:No, I Repeat, NO, Chaos Stories
As awesome the idea is and as irresistible it must be to make a fanfiction about this, DON'T. Not only does this normally end up with a character/characters who are literally invincible (Mostly because a character almost always ends up being Chaos's second-in-command.) But you also have to think about preserving the original mythology that Rick works so hard on staying accurate to.
Chaos is described as a literal dark mass with a consciousness (more or less), being chaos at it's finest. It would be impossible for Chaos to take a human shape (Or even appear in a dream speaking a coherent language, for that matter.), and even more impossible for Chaos to take particular interest in a person or group of people (Godly or not.), unless the literal balance of the universe and all alternate universes was messed with.
2:Put Limits to How Much a Power Can Be Used
All of Rick Riordan's characters have limits to their powers, and flaws or curses that can hold them back. For instance, Percy wouldn't go all blood-bender on anyone in fear of hurting his loved ones or making them scared of him, loyalty being his fatal flaw (Although I am fully convinced that he could totally go all blood-bender. It's practically canon at this point. Even if this subject hadn't popped up in HoH, blood is 90% water. It's actually really scary to think of people getting severe blood loss for seemingly no reason.)
Try to have your character get very tired or weak when using or overusing their power/powers. The more crazy or OP the powers, the greater the consequences. Say, a character with mind control might be able to control one powerful mind and then pass out or go in a comatose/vegetative state for a day or so. Even more, they don't even have to get weak for their powers to have limits. I have an idea (Use it if you wish, I would actually love to see someone else try it out.) of making an ancestor/legacy of the sirens who feels extreme pain in his/her vocal chords for the rest of the day once they start singing.
3:Make the Power/Powers Very Descriptive or Only Able to be Used in Certain Times/Situations
I know the title is super long but I couldn't think of another way to put this. For example, instead of saying that a character has water and fire-bending powers (Water bending, man am I using Percy a lot as an example today.), you could say that he/she has powers over mist and can spark a fire with almost zero effort. Or, heck, make a demigod who is a child of one of the twenty-four hours of the day (Yes, I looked it up, there is one Greek god for each hour of the day.), and make him/her incredibly powerful, but only on the hour of their godly parent.
4:Less Big Three Children/Blessings!!
Do you know how much it infuriates me when I see people who say stuff like, "Oh, I'm a child of Poseidon, legacy of Zeus, Hunter of Artemis, and I'm blessed by Hera, Hestia, Athena, and Hermes."? (I mean, come on, am I the only one who will say that I'm the child of a minor goddess and proud of it? I'm only a child of Iris and legacy of Athena! I'm not going to say that I'm that one super-powerful special little snowflake everyone loves.) If you look or act like a Big Three kid, then you have the right to say that you're a Big Three kid.
Anywho, (Sorry, I have some issues with this that I needed to rant about for a bit.XD) the same goes for fanfiction. When people write about Percy's long lost twin sister or something, it can end up with this person becoming super powerful and the line between them being mortal and immortal can get pretty fuzzy. In other words, try your best to not make too many OC's that are children of the big three.
Yay, I'm done! I hope you guys liked it. I'm doing the ridiculously OP fanfic example in a bit.
