It was late in Asgard, the sky completely black and filled with billions of stars. In just an hour though the edge of the sky would start to lighten and the sun would make its appearance. Thor and Loki sat on the edge of the bi-frost, close to the middle, their shoulders touching. They had both had just enough mead to make them completely relaxed. Loki had his arms behind him, holding his weight as he stared up at the stars.

So many… it made him feel so small. He glanced over at Thor, wondering if his brother felt the same. He opened his mouth to voice his question but completely different words came out.

"Would you die for me Thor?"

Thor blinked his blue eyes slowly. The question shocked him and for a moment he wasn't sure how to answer. He turned and met Loki's green eyes. When he met those eyes the answer was so clear he didn't know why he even had to think about it.

"I would gladly give my life if it meant your safety Loki."

Seemingly satisfied with that answer Loki turned his attention back up to the stars. He was aware of Thor still staring at him but didn't ask. Maybe Thor wanted him to say that he would be glad to die for him as well? Loki closed his eyes, a small smile playing on his lips. That would be a stupid question, the answer obvious.

Thor stared at his brother's sharp features. He knew a side of Loki that few did. The side that when alone or with those he did consider friends (though few) were near, Loki would smile, he would joke, he loved reading in the sunlight, practicing his spells in the garden, and he even loved animals. Thor was fairly sure he was one of the few people who knew that last fact. It was only by chance when they were younger that he had caught Loki saving some animal, healing its wound and feeding it to bring it back to health. But Thor also knew that if provoked Loki would do everything in his power to save his brother, mother or father. Given that they would soon be old enough to follow their father into battle, Thor knew that the danger of that happening was becoming more real.

"Loki, you must make me a promise."

Green eyes flickered back over to him. A noise of question left Loki's throat.

"If I will die for you… you must promise, should anything happen to me, that you will live for me."

"Thor-" The idea of the first son of Odin dead was absurd.

Thor's hands grabbed Loki's shoulders, forcing him to face the elder god. "Promise me!"

Loki stared into Thor's eyes. He saw just a hint of desperation there. "I promise," he murmured.

End.
