The alarm clock showed 6:30 AM and its continously beeping annoyingly.
"Good morning clock my old enemy " Simon said tired.
And there he was a 18 year old boy laying in the bed staring at the wall wishing forthis day to end. Simon had always hated first days of school. Well who doesn't?
"I'm sorry bed but summer is over and we won't see each other this often. School came again. I hope mum won't insist doing my hair. She makes me look like a loser."
Then he heard the door knocking.
"Simon are you awake? Do you need help? "
"Speaking of the devil." he thought
"Yes mum I'm awake and no mum I don't need help. The wheelchair is right next to me."
Then she opened the door and stayed there.
"Are you sure darling ?"
"Mum I am sure. Why don't you go to Alex?
"Alexandra is already awake. She said that she hadn't slept at all. She must be very excited for her freshman year at high school.
"Stupid girl"
"Hey don't talk about your sister like that young boy.
"Fine sorry. Can you please go. I will get dressed and no thanks I can handle it myself. "
Jane smiled. She loved this about her son. He never asked for help but he did everything by his own. She touched his messy black hair and left.
Simon with a little struggle sitted on his wheelchair. He didn't mind he did that every day. Then he went to the bathroom and washed his face. He was still feeling sleepy. Then he started to get dressed. At first he wore a blue shirt and with a bit difficulty dark blue jeans. Then he watched himself in the mirror. He was really tall actually, he had dark brown coffee eyes, a small button nose. People often told him that he was really handsome but he didn't like when they said that because he was a pretty modest guy. Then he said " I love my life" Every morning was the same routine. He would always look himself at the mirror and say that he loved his life and he actually did. He had a nice place to live, amazing parents,a cute sister who looked like she was a female version of him, he went to school and his grades were pretty good and he had loyal and funny friends. Yes he had a really nice life despite his disability.
"Simon come. Mum made breakfast. " he heard Alex screaming.
"OK no need to be loud."
"I know " she screamed again laughing.
Simon's room was at the first floor and he had his own bathroom so things would be easier for him.
Simon went to the kitchen and grabbed a toasted bread slice and strawberry jam.
"Alex mum told me that you hadn't slept all night. " Simon told his sister.
"I'm just so excited. I bet highschool is really fun and has the best boys"
"Alexandra Johnson don't you think about that!" Simon replied.
Jane and Mark laughed while Alexandra's face became red.
"I'm 15 idiot. I'm not a baby. Plus it was only a joke."
"Yeah whatever "
"Hey stay calm you two" Mark told them.
But Alex didn't listen.
"What about you Sim? Has miss Daphne noticed you?"
"Shut up Alex"
Daphne Brawn was the most popular girl in high school. Everybody said that she shined like a sun and they weren't wrong in fact. Daphe had a perfect honey tone skin, long legs, long blond soft like silk hair, big blue eyes, cherry full lips, to sum up everything of her was perfect. Simon had always had a crush on her since sophomore year and still. They hadn't talk very much only during some classes they had together but they were just small talks about homework and school projects nothing special.
"Alex stop bothering your brother or you will be grounded. "
"Yeah whatever " she said and didn't talk more.
It was 7:30 AM of the morning.
"Okay get ready kids. Time to go for the first day of school. " Mark said.
"I'm so happy is senior year for me. I am looking forward to going to college. " Simon said.
The Johnson family went to the garage and Jane had also taken the camera. Every year when school started she took a photo of her "kids" and compared it to the previous year photo and always said how much her treasures had grown up.
"Smile for the camera kids"
"Cheeeeese"
"Perfect. Oh I can't believe how much you have grown. Simon is in his last year and Alex just started her first year of high school. "
"Mum please don't cry " Alex said to her.
Jane laughed and said that she wouldn't. Then Alex entered in the car while Mark was helping Simon to get in. When they got our from the garage Jane said from the garage entrance:" Wait Simon. I forgot to style your hair."
"What did she say?"asked Mark.
"Nothing just leave fast. " Simon said with a poker face.
The road to school was quiet. Simon looked out of the window and saw some elementary school kids walking with their parents. He saw that scene every morning actually. Actually he had never left his disability to take him down. To show this he had taken swimming classes, he went to the gym and he had actually made a parachute trip. But despite all of these deep down he had always wanted to experience the feeling of walking. He wanted to run until his legs couldn't take no more, he wanted to explore dangerous places where he couldn't go with a wheelchair. It had always been one of his dreams. To walk even for 1 second, just to see how it felt.
"Simon we're here." Mark said.
"Emm what?"
"Earth to Simon." Alex shouted.
"Sorry I zoned out. "
"Don't worry. Let me help you get out of the car."
Mark helped Simon said them goodbye and left.
Alex and Simon went to the hallway which was full of high schoolers who were making noise.
"So this is high school. " Alex said
"Yep this is it"
"I have to go to find my friends and then I'll take my schedule. You OK with that Sim"
"I'm fine and for the 1000th time don't call me Sim"
"OK Sim" Alex said smiling and run away.
" She is annoying but I love her" Simon thought.
Then he felt a hand on his shoulder.
"Hey man welcome to senior year. "
"Hey Tom"
Tom was Simon's best friend since middle school. They were just like brothers.
" I can't believe it's final year."said Tom.
"The journey doesn't end here bro. We still have college. "
"Don't remind me that. I think I'm collegephobe. "
"Hahah. Come on. College can't be that bad. Anyway where are the others.
"At the end of the hallway. Let's go."
They went together to the end of the hallway. Tom insisted to push the wheelchair for him but Simon kept telling that he could do it himself. He didn't want anybody's help. He didn't want others to feel sorry for him.
And there the squad was. There was Derek, Sue and Georgia.
"Welcome Simon. " they said together.
Simon felt really good. He really cared about his friends. Besides family his friends were the best people of the world and he really liked the fact that they treated him like a normal person. Then the bell rang. It was time to start a new day of a new year.
