"Ben, honey, there is such a thing as being too protective. Did I pick you up every time you cried? No. Did I feed you every time you were hungry? No. Did I fix those frayed wires behind the TV? I mean, what am I, Ben? An electrician. Come on, Ben. You grew up without every little thing I did coming from a baby book and you turned out... well, you're still here aren't you?"
Ben crossed his arms over his chest. "I feel so coddled." He said sarcastically.
"Well, you should, since I'm making dip for your brother and miniature roommate that you're kicking out of your apartment for a date! Who is this bimbo, anyway? Here you go, Emma." Bonnie set a tiny piece of cheese on Emma's plastic highchair tray and she picked it up to eat it, but it slipped out of her tiny fingers and landed on the wooden floor under her chair. "Don't worry. Grandma's got it, Emma." Bonnie picked the cheese up off the floor and set it back on the tray.
"Mom!" Ben snapped, grabbing the food off the tray before Emma could eat it.
"What? I was faster than the five second rule!" Bonnie argued, raising her hands in mock innocence.
"No! No second rule!" Ben argued, tossing the chunk of cheese into the sink as Bonnie continued to slice up ingredients for a fancy dip.
"Honey, when I was raising you boys, it was a three day rule." Bonnie said, pointing the knife at him. "If you kept it down, it was safe. If you didn't... well, that's why we had a dog." Ben looked at his mother, his mouth agape in disbelief. "Ben, your brother is 6'5" and he grew up eating dirt!"
"Okay, okay, just don't give my baby anymore food that's been on the floor, or any other surface in this apartment!" Ben ordered.
"Fine." Bonnie said, rolling her eyes. "So are you gonna tell me about this girl or not?"
Ben slid into the tall chair at the counter across from his mother. "She's really special."
"Honey, she said yes to a date with you. The only 'special' she is is special ed."
"Mom!"
"I'm sorry, honey. That was harsh. I've just been sitting on that one for a long time and I saw an opportunity and I took it." Bonnie apologized. "I meant, who is the girl lucky enough to score a date with my handsome Benji?" She wondered, holding his chin in her hand.
"She really is a special girl. She's smart and funny and beautiful."
"Wow, it sounds like you really like this girl." Bonnie commented, sliding the chopped ingredients off the cutting board and into a bowl.
"I do." Ben exposed. "I love her, actually."
"Honey," Bonnie said, setting the cutting board and knife down. "This is you we're talking about. I'm guessing you met this girl at the bar this morning? I'd say 'love' is a little premature."
"Actually, Mom..." Ben started, but he quickly changed his mind and decided it might not be the best idea to tell his mother about his plans for Cassie.
The door bursted open and Riley followed in after it, throwing her arms up in triumph. "I did it!" She announced. "I got the job! You are looking at the newest employee of Bender, Bowman, Brockman, and... some other guy whose name I can't pronounce."
"Hey, congrats, Riles!" Ben encouraged and she smiled.
"Thanks, Ben!"
"Wow, that's a really long name for a strip club." Bonnie commented and Riley glared at her.
"It's a law firm. And I start my internship on Monday!" Riley said.
"Well, then you better find the rest of that skirt." Bonnie said, motioning towards Riley's attire with the knife. Riley was wearing a white blouse and a dark purple skirt, but the pencil skirt was much too short for a lawyer, even if she was just an intern.
