Chapter 11
Susie jogged all the way home, her conversation with Noah replaying itself again and again inside her head. It was almost half past five and if she didn't hurry home now, she wouldn't hear the end of it from Justine. She had promised to help Justine get ready for her date, which was at seven, and so she started to run.
Noah had told her to check her phone. To check if Mike really cared about her like he said he did. But she wouldn't do that now. She would play hard to get, like all those girls did in the books she was always reading on this website: wattpad.com.
Okay so she was being unrealistic but this sudden urge to slap Noah really didn't do anything for her scrambled thoughts. She reached her family's townhouse in record time and stepped inside, bracing herself for Justine's worst. Instead, Justine emerged from their shared room, a towel on her head and a towel wrapped around her. "You're late!" she said and beckoned Susie towards their room.
Susie noticed that Justine hadn't decided what to wear yet, counting on her to help. This made her feel really guilty so she pushed back thoughts of Mike, Noah and any other drama that had made its way into Susie's once-normal life.
"Where is Dave taking you again?" she asked rifling through Justine's closet. "Um..I'm not sure... He's taking me to dinner so it might be somewhere posh?" replied her sister as she dried her hair with the towel.
"You don't have any dresses Tine!" Susie exclaimed after a while of pointless rifling through the closet. Then it hit her.
"Hey Tine, remember that dress Mom...Mom got for herself before...the accident?" she asked, whipping her head towards her sister and her voice shaking a bit.
"The one she wouldn't wear because she wanted to save it for us?"
Susie nodded mutely. "She would've wanted you to wear it tonight." Justine nodded and went to retrieve it. Time was running short and the dress was perfect for Justine.
Susie got out a matching clutch, heels and a belt for the dress. Justine came back in the room and spread the dress on her bed. "Let me do your hair, Tine"
Susie blow dried it and straightened it. Justine had the same shade of blonde as Susie but where Susie's hair were straight, Justine's were long and wavy. When they were poker straight, Susie took out her curling iron and curled the front bangs and pinned them back with a white rose barette. Perfect.
She admired her handiwork for a second before starting on her make up. She dabbed some foundation on her face but not so much so that her face wouldn't look caked. She then started on her sister's eyes. She put some dark blue liquid eye liner on them and curled her lashes a bit. She put on some mascara and silvery white eye shadow on her eyes. Justine's naturally blue eyes seemed to pop with the miracles Susie had done to her eyes.
She quickly used the blusher brush and streaked her cheek bones with rosy pink. Dabbing on shiny lipgloss, Justine was ready to go. "Hurry up and put on the dress!"
Justine slipped it on and Susie handed her the white rose earring and necklace set along with the sliver dial, off-white strapped watch she had. As Justine slipped on her heels, Susie sighed.
Justine looked beautiful! Dave would be blown away. She looked at the happiness etched so clearly on her sister's face and a pang of jealousy hit her. She wanted to dress up fancy and go out with a hot, charming, caring, compassionate, understanding and loving boyfriend.
But so far, she was stuck with those two douchebags: Noah and Micheal.
Urgh! Why couldn't she stop thinking about them?!
"How do I look?" asked Justine meekly. Her chiffon blue dress looked as if it was custom-made for her, ruffles at the neckline and after the belt Susie had attached, it flared out till above her knees. It was light and flouncy and Susie's engenious skills with the straightener and other things used on Justine's hair and face gave her a sort of angelic look.
"You look beautiful Justine! Dave is going to be speechless! But seriously, if a hot guy asks for your number, dump nerdy Dave and - GIVE IT TO HIM!" she teased playfully.
Justine looked at her with moch horror. "SUSIE! Dave is perfect and I would certainly NOT replace him with a 'hot' jerk!" Ofcourse she wouldn't. Justine and Dave had been going strong for almost 3 years and were in the same college studying the same thing, only Susie wasn't sure what they were studying. She wouldn't be surprised if they got married!
A horn sounded outside and Susie murmured, loud enough to make Justine hear, "Speak of the devil..." Justine slapped her arm playfully and went into nervous mode. Fiddling with her hair, dress, bag, everything!
"Wait right here, Tine! I'l get your Prince Cha-GEEK!" and she bounded down the stairs before Justine could catch hold of her. It was funny how Susie was so bipolar. With Micheal, she was the hot girl who was too good for him. With Noah, she was the needy, clingy, former-stalker that wasn't over him and with her sister, Susie was funny, happy-go-lucky, free spirited. It was weird alright but the weirdiest thing was that she didn't know what to make of herself.
She opened the front door to see a clearly flustered-looking Dave, scratching awkwardly at his neck and holding a white flowered corset. Aww, Susie couldn't help but think.
"Hiya Dave!" she said and led him inside. He was wearing a formal-looking jacket with pants and sporting the whole casual-but-not-casual look. "You look dashing!" she complimented and the guy turned red. He was just too adorable.
She positioned him near the foot of the staircase and said, "Now, I'm going to get my sister so you better keep looking at that staircase, ya hear? When I whistle, it means that the Princess Geek has taken flight, okay?" She laughed at her brilliant sense of...whatever it was she had that compelled her to say silly things and rushed up the stairs.
"He's here Sis! And looking quite yummy, if I do say so myself." Justine was clearly not paying any attention to her little sister's lameness and kept arranging and rearanging everything she had on. Susie rolled her eyes. It was like he was going to pop the question tonight or something. Wait. Would they? They had never gone for a fancy date with the whole shebang....Hmm...
"Come on Princess, your other half is waiting." she said and pulled her reluctant sister out of the room. She was being impossible, Justine was. But as soon as she took the first step down the stairs, Susie half-heartedly whistled and all signs of Justine's former nervousness flew out the window.
Susie bounded down the stairs faster, in order to see the reaction of the couple when the saw each other. She pulled out her camera and took a vido as Dave gasped, his jaw hanging open, as he saw her sister coming down the stairs. Her suster was equally shocked at the vision of her dork looking...not so dork.
Susie snapped alot of pictures of both of them, to embarass them furthur and let them go, warning Dave to bring Justine home before midnight.
She watched as Dave's car disappeared and headed back inside, deciding to straighten out the messy room that had been turned into a make over salon for the last two hours.
After doing that she would curl up on the coach, maybe order pizza and watch TV till Justine came home. It was just her and the empty house. With Hayley gone for a sleepover and their father away on businees, Susie sighed.
A typical Friday night for Susie Rayner.
