The jump onto the roof jars me even more. I clench my teeth as I make impact with the gravel on the roof, stumbling to a stop. I don't allow myself to fall, because that would hurt even more. I make my way over to Four as the initiates jump from various cars. I press a hand to my side, wincing. Shauna nudges me "What's wrong?" I shake my head "Its nothing, I'm fine." She presses her lips together. "I don't exactly believe you, but I'll let it slide for now. It's go time." She says, concerned. She looks towards the assembling initiates. Suddenly a scream echoes from the edge of the roof. My head snaps up and I run over, knowing something must be very wrong. People don't scream in Dauntless. Nothing scares them enough to. I peer over the edge carefully, to see a familiar Dauntless girl lying dead on the pavement. I look down in respect. Sometimes even the best mess up. Who I'm fairly certain is her sister is screaming and crying, only held back from jumping over the edge herself by a few friends. I turn to her, placing a hand on her shoulder. "It was painless. She died brave." I whisper to her. She stops struggling so much, shaking. "Now you have to be brave too. We have to go." I say, brushing her friends off of her. She nods slowly, trembling and silent. I lead her over to the others slowly. I don't want to push her too far, but she has to move on. My heart aches for the loss of an initiate already. We aren't off to a good start. Four nods at me respectfully as I return to his side, straight faced, despite the pain I feel for the girl.
They make their way into a semi-circle around us. I stand with my hands on my hips. I count 10 transfers, 12 Dauntless-born. Kate and Shauna will take care of them. That's the tradition, transfer instructors take transfer initiates. I guess the idea is that we'd make them more comfortable, or more loyal to their faction. Really we're just bitter towards our old factions. Most of us, that is. But maybe that's best. To show them that faction comes before blood. Four crosses his arms. "Welcome to Dauntless. I'm Four. This is Kate, Shauna, and Cal. We are your instructors." It's strange to be on the other side of the initiation speech. "We are currently standing on the roof of the Dauntless compound. We will be taking the stairs down. However, you, will be jumping off that ledge." I say, smirking. Oh, memories. Their faces go pale. One Erudite boy shakes his head. "You aren't serious." Shauna smirks "Oh but we are. You want to be Dauntless, right? You have to prove it." Everyone goes silent. "Well is there water at the bottom or something?" A Candor boy says. Four shrugs "I don't know. You'll have to find out." He tilts his head, but doesn't respond. "Good then." Kate says, smiling. I turn on my heel, and walk to and down the stairs. I glance back, to see the Abnegation girl step up firs.t I smile. I knew she was something to be reckoned with.
We make it down the stairs in time to see her land. Four pulls the net down, helping her to get off without falling. They exchange a few words, and he turns to the crowd "First jumper, Tris!" Cheers echo through the compound. She smiles widely, bun somehow still in place. I guess they know how to make those secure in Abnegation. I smirk a bit at the thought. Tris. I'll have to remember that. The Candor boy lands next, to my surprise. I'd taken him for somewhat of a fake. But you know what they say, there is no better liar than those who know how to tell the truth.
Four leads the transfers down a familiar hallway, into a familiar hallway. "You'll stay here for the remainder of training." I say, falling into sync with Four effortlessly. I know the drill. "Get changed, and meet us in the hall in 4 minutes." He says, and walks out the door, leaving them to get out of the various faction clothes that they wear. There will be a bonfire tonight to take care of those.
By the time they make it out, it's been far past 4 minutes. Closer to 7, by my count. Four stares at them crossly. "When I say 4 minutes, I mean 4 minutes. We are soldiers, ok? Be on time." He says tersely. They just nod, seeming a bit frightened. Four is pretty intimidating. Unless you know him. Then it's just normal. Four beckons them to follow him to the Chasm. We descend the winding path into the underground portion of the compound, where water sometimes drips off the black rock. I watch their eyes widen as it comes into view. "This is here to remind us of the line between bravery and stupidity!" he yells over the water. "A jump off of this edge will end your life!" he continues. I see one tall Candor boy blink, and look down. Strange. I nod "I've seen it." A few peer over the edge carefully, curiously. Those are the ones with a fascination for adrenaline. I can already tell. They push themselves to do crazy things for no reason. They're usually the ones who end up dead. I remember thinking the chasm was dangerous. I also remember that it is. I remember seeing Alex's broken body. I bite my lip and look away, unable to stand the memory any longer. She's come to symbolize a lot more than a friend to me. Innocence. Strength. And a responsibility to protect others. But I can't afford to think about that right now. I have a job to do.
