I was a new, new kid. In other words, I'd never been a new kid before, and considering I was just starting my first day of my senior year, I almost prayed that I'd never be the new kid again.
Sitting in the back corner of the classroom was always a personal goal of mine. Sitting in front of people gave me anxiety and sitting in between two people made me claustrophobic.
Somehow I managed to stay in the back corner by myself all the way up until the last two kids in my homeroom class came in. They were both kind of cute, tall and lanky with dark hair. One had gauges and was wearing a backwards snapback. He sat next to me and the other guy sat next to him. I just tried not to seem too anxious, but not too friendly either.
I thought I was doing a decent job until I caught Mr. Gauges-and-a-Snapback staring at me.
"Is there a problem?" I snapped, a little more aggressively than I had intended.
"Wha..? Oh, no, sorry.." he mumbled and looked away.
I felt bad. I could tell he was probably just as anxious as I was. Was it possible he was new too? Possible but not probable. I heard him and his friend talking about their classes and a familiar name popped up.
"Hey, did you say you had math with Sparks first?" I asked Gauges.
"Yeah, I did," he responded.
"So do I," I mumbled at first, but then spoke up. "Um I'm sorry I snapped at you, do you think you could show me where her room is?"
"Yeah, I could do that. And that's alright, don't sweat it," he smiled at me.
I smiled back and asked "uh, what other classes do you have?"
"English with Fitz, music theory with Sanders and guitar lab with Haner," he recited.
"No way," I said excitedly.
"Way," they both said together.
I laughed a little and said "you just told me my schedule."
"Sick," Gauges held up his hand for a fistbump which I reciprocated.
"My name is Simplicity, but I go by Sim."
"That's exotic," the other guy says jokingly.
"Well I don't dance so don't get any ideas," I smirk as I gather up my books.
"Uh, this is Mike Fuentes we're talking about," Gauges scoffs.
"Tony, she's new here, she doesn't know as well as everyone else that I'm a flaming homo."
Tony, I think to myself. Almost as fitting as Gauges.
"Well now I do," I say, chuckling.
"It's actually just a running joke we have with our friends, Jaime and Vic," Mike explains.
"Gotcha."
"They're in our classes, too. This is gonna be one interesting year," Tony says amused.
But oh so little did we know.
