Ethan's POV
I always loved the way my best friend and I walked together down the road. We go to high school in our third year, and it's pretty boring. Everyone always identified us as "boyfriend and girlfriend" but we aren't interested in each other, and never will be. Her long brown hair fluttered in the autumn wind, and my short black hair slightly twitched under my beanie. I never care, I always wear my usual ripped black jeans and Nirvana shirt. "So, James has been asking us if we were ever going to get together one day...," she brought the subject up even though I've told her multiple times to drop it. James is our third friend that we only see at school.
"I've told you before May, we agreed that we wouldn't date under the influence of other kids at school," I started to raise my voice. May Jackson, I've known her since the third grade. We've been friends ever since. She's the... extroverted, happy girl to my... emo, dark look you could say.
"Well, I've been thinking for a long time, and, maybe we should try us out. Wouldn't you agree?" She questioned

"What do you mean?" I told her with a puzzled look.

"We should go on a date. Just to see if we could work as a couple. There's always been that tension there, and I mean, it could be another adventure! An adventure of self discovery! C'mon Ethan, for me?" She gave me her regular puppy eyes when she looked up at me.
I rolled my eyes, "Fine. I will do it for you because you're my friend. If we do become "boyfriend and girlfriend," just promise me that you won't be going around the school yelling it out for everyone to hear. You know the last thing I need is for Cole to come looking for me, again." Cole is this jock that used to date May. He hates me.
"Don't worry about it Jake. He was a jerk. I ditched him and all his dumb jocks, they're a lot dumber. Besides, since when did the famous Ethan Anderson care about what other people thought?" She asked me with a confused look.
"I just don't want to be beat up again. That's all. You know how they feel about me." I sternly told her.
"Yeah yeah whatever. Now, our date. How about we head over to the sandwich place," she told me as if I had offended her entire family.
"So... we're just going to walk there? What about school?" I asked.
"Fuck school! Let's just skip today"
We started down the road and I stuck my hands in my pockets. She was leaping around and around. We were coming into an intersection. A truck was speeding over the speed limit and ran the red light as May began to cross the road. The truck hit her straight on, and didn't stop. It just kept going, didn't even hesitate on the brakes. I ran over to where she was and it seemed like the whole world had just stopped. The cars stopped. The people stopped to look. I could hear the sirens in the distance as I looked down at May, her mouth and nose were bleeding, she was as fragile as glass. The next few minutes were a blur, she was taken away by doctors and nurses as I climbed into the back of the ambulance with them. Everyone was rushing around trying to get her stabilized. I just kept my emotionless stare at May, in disbelief of what happened and what I should have done. I didn't even notice that tears were running down my cheeks.

*time skip to hospital brought to you by your amazing author*

As I waited for May to wake up in her hospital bed, what looked like a doctor walked in. I stared at him with an intense look which made him jump. He was trying to balance the stack of papers he was holding. He walked over to May's bedside and flipped through the pages. "Hello, I'm very, deeply sorry about what happened... My name is Micheal Keen by the way. I'm the doctors assistant." He had shiny brown hair and blue eyes. He was about our age in high school, and I think I've seen him around school before, he must have taken an internship here. His voice was comforting and smooth. I looked down, I have to be worried about my friend. Just because a hot guy walked- oh shit.
