Prologue
It was dark and cold. The trees outlines only by the darkness of the night that clung to them. My paws carrying my small body as fast into the woods as they could. The fur on my back slicked down against me because of my speed. I heard the some of the fallen autumn leaves crunch under the pressure of another wolf before it flew out from behind a tree, its black fur shining in the full moons light as it tackled me to the ground.
Got you.
My older brother’s voice teased in my head. I rolled over and got up resentfully do to the fact that he always found me in hide and seek. I shook my fur trying to get all of the dirt and crunchy leaves out of my dark black coat. Joey was still laughing as I shot him a dirty look and went to walk away. A howl interrupted my calm stride. Normally on full moon nights werewolves will run around in the woods so under any other circumstances this howl wouldn’t have been a big deal.
My stomach started doing flips as I snapped my head to my brother. He looked just as alarmed as I did. And in that moment I knew it was just as bad as I thought it was. I started running full speed toward the location of the distressed howl.
Kathryn! Stop! Don’t go over there, it’s probably nothing.
Joey warned me through or mind link. But I knew better than too believe it was nothing. I ran full speed toward the clearing where I could see my parents and a small group of rouge wolves. They weren’t supposed to be here, these wolves had intentionally come onto our territory. They looked thirsty for blood and I knew that’s what they were going to get if someone didn’t come help my parents. I would be useless to help because I was still only a pup, not entirely in control of my wolf.
I watched from behind a tree as the group advanced on my parents. Joey finally came up next to me and I could see the pain in his eyes as he watched the small group circle mom and dad. He wanted to go fight with them, but I could hear my parents through our pack mind link telling him to stay and protect me. I willed for the rest of our pack come to the rescue but nothing happened as the leader of the group attacked my dad. A minute later, still nothing was happening as another wolf attacked my mom. A whine escaped from me and a wolf from the attacking group whipped his head straight in my direction before a heart breaking howl of pain cut through the night. My mom was losing the battle. Sensing the weakness the wolf that had been staring at me went over and encased his jaw around my mom’s neck, ending her life.
My dad didn’t need to see her die, because he could feel it as his mate died. It went straight to his heart and gave him the strength he needed to kill the wolf attacking him along with the one that killed mom before being tackled by the last one. He was losing, weak from the loss of his mate and the battle. He finally killed the last rouge and limped over to my mom’s lifeless body. He nudged her with his muzzle, when he got no response I buried my head in Joey’s neck and cried. My dad lied down next to my mom’s body in the middle of the clearing and closed his eyes. I watched him praying that he would open them again. But nothing happened. Five dead bodies scattered the clearing and darkening the night; three dead enemy rouges and two heroic alphas that sacrificed their lives to keep others safe.
The rest of my pack arrives only moments later. They observed the clearing, and when they saw the massacre, they all bowed their heads down to the fallen alphas. Joey and I came out from our hiding spots behind the tree. I wanted so badly to shift back into my human form so I could run over to my parents, but I didn’t have any clothes I could put on after I shifted, so I stayed in my wolf form and slowly walked toward my mom and dad. I told myself time and time again to stay strong. But I was an orphan now, Joey wasn’t old enough to live on his own, especially too young to be caring for his younger sister. I sat down next to my father’s body and put my hands in my paws; Joey came up and did the same. Soon enough the whole pack surrounded the clearing in a circle mimicking Joey and me, mourning their brave alphas.
I woke up in the morning still beside my parents and in wolf form. The rogues’ bodies had been taken while I slept and my parents has shifted back into humans and been clothed. Joey sat beside me, eyes closed and arms wrapped around his legs he had brought up to his chest. His black hair was messy and his face scrunched up in pain. I stood up and nudged his hand; he looked up at me with sad eyes.
“Hey sis,” he said pulling me into a hug and petting my head “Someone brought some clothes for you, you can go get changed okay?” he said thrusting a bag full of my clothes at me.
I grabbed the back in my mouth and went behind a tree. I shifted back into my human form and pulled on the white shorts and a sweater. I put on my pair of small purple Uggs and went to sit beside Joey. I rested my head on his shoulder.
“What do we do now?” I asked him. The reality had set in at that moment. I was an orphan. My parents were dead and our pack was didn’t have an alpha.
“I don’t know Kathryn;” he shook his head “I just don’t know.”
