“Keep going, keep going, we’re going to be okay, keep going,” Kenna urged and I tried blocking out the sounds of fervent search and destruction. They were trying to find us.
CHAPTER 16
I felt like we were down there forever, just moving forward in the darkness, trying to escape the situation alive.
“What happened?” I asked quietly and was surprised to hear my voice catch.
“Asmodeus broke the barrier…and his children were sent after all of us. Alejandro went missing in the chaos and we couldn’t find you,” Kenna explained quietly in one breath and we came to a dead end of dirt and my throat caught in panic.
Pup had led me away from the cabin before we were attacked. I looked to the small figure in my arms and kept my eyes fixed on her as to avoid panicking. Kenna swiveled around and stopped breathing, “He found the tunnel…!”
She quickly pushed me aside and pressed her palms against the dirt. White rays penetrated the earth and attacked the wall, making it collapse and in a rush of panic and need of air, I spilled out with Kenna, near tears. Kenna joined me and began to seal the exit and Pup leapt from my arms.
The throbbing in my head became blinding and tears sprung from my eyes and slipped down my cheeks.
“Kenna, the children are going to be blocking the cave entrance soon, we can’t block the exit now, we need to go,” came Josh’s voice as he stumbled into the small room.
“You didn’t find Alejandro?” was her meek reply and he shook his sadly and looked to me.
His eyes widened and it took one step for him to reach my side and he wrapped his arms around me, “I’m sorry; are you okay?”
I gave a small unsure nod and tried wiping away the tears that had gathered but the headache made my vision tint red and it was a type of pain that I wasn’t used to. Despite all this, I was acutely aware of Josh’s arms pulled around me in a concerned hold.
“Where will we go?” Kenna questioned and turned away from the exit and her eyes glowed purple.
“Wherever, but we need to leave right now,” Josh spoke quickly and Kenna nodded with a look that held guilt and fear.
Josh stepped back and twisted into the form of a large wolf and laid down on his stomach, pleading with his eyes. “Erin, get on,” Kenna ordered and dread filled the pit of my stomach and with hesitation, I obeyed her orders. Josh rose and Kenna seized Pup into her arms and panic filled me.
What about Kenna?
With a fluid motion, the wolf beneath me charged forward and I cried out then pulled myself closer to the thick black coat and locked my trembling fingers around clumps of fur.
“What about Kenna?” I worried aloud and thought of Pup and wanted to jump off and go back to the two girls.
Josh jerked his head, motioning to behind us and I peered behind me and noticed a smaller chestnut brown wolf with a black Pup sitting on her shoulder blades. The eyes of the russet wolf flashed purple and looked to me in brief worry and my stomach dropped.
Kenna could become a wolf too. How did I never know this? Wolf Loved…Seemed obvious enough, didn’t it?
She caught up with Josh and shot ahead on the path, as if leading the way to safety and Josh followed in faster strides that I was sure would surpass her speed in a second’s time.
A cold shadow fell over us and I arched my neck, embracing the sight that paralyzed my senses and made both the wolves move faster still. Small winged children with grey skin and unforgettable screams descended over us and we were surrounded in a whirlwind of these creatures. A frightened scream ripped from the throat of Pup as she cried out in relentless yips and the claws of the children drew blood from my exposed skin. They tore at us and did nothing more than leave long scratches on the surface of our bodies as if their only task was to slow us down.
Kenna came to an abrupt stop and melted to her human form and held Pup tightly in her grip before coming over to us and releasing her to my arms. “Josh, go. Keep running. Get Erin and Pup somewhere safe,” she ordered and Josh let out a low growl that even I understood. I am not leaving you.
“Go! I’ll catch up! Go to the underwater cave, you know which one! Now go, Josh,” Kenna said sternly and she faced the storm of young vampires and a tornado of white light formed around her body and stabbed through the children, causing screams to fill the air.
A low whine rippled through Josh but he jerked forward and broke into a run that nearly threw me off his back. I pulled myself flat against him, keeping Pup underneath me and she cried the entire time and I could only soothe her with my uncertain promises.
Air bit at my skin and the forest’s trees danced until they became one blue and the scream of the wind and children only pressed Josh to move faster and he did. My fingers became cement around his fur, locked in fear, and my entire body was seized up so I wouldn’t become the equivalent of a kite and fly from the safety of this emotionally destroyed wolf.
Safe indeed.
