allowance-that oh-so-welcome chunk of money their parents hand out once a week (or in some cases every tow weeks,or once a month). Here's why an allowance wins so many fans.

But it's not just the cash; its that it comes in so regularly. You can count on getting it, without going through a big hassle each time. "If I didn't get an allowances, I'd have to ask my parents for money to get everything I want," says Charles."An allowance makes me feel like I don't have to depend on my parents for everything," notes Amanda B. Julia adds: "It makes me feel more grown-up."

Hot Stuff

Matt notes another allowance advantage: "I can buy things I want."(As long as they're not on your parents totally off-limits list, of course.) "Before I got an allowance, my parents didn't always buy me I wanted," Katie explains. "If I wanted a pair of special sneakers, they might say it's too expensive and not necessity. Now that I get an allowance,if they don't want to pay, I can pay for it myself.
