It isn't everyday that your best friend asks you to run away for two and half months. To put everything on hold, your home, your friends, your entire life, and leave it all behind to go across the county and back. On this particular Saturday morning, however, this is exactly how the day started for Jessica Walker.
Damn him and his friends for being so talented. Damn them all for starting their stupid band and becoming so God awful famous. Damn the screaming fans and the teenybopper magazines. Most of all, damn the entire Lynch family for being so ridiculously good looking.
Yes, it's true. If it wasn't for all of that she wouldn't be laying here in her best friends bedroom, just as she did most Saturday mornings, faced with such a huge, life altering decision.
Why the hell did he have to run off and join that band, anyway? He wasn't even a part of the family. At least not ,by blood. It wasn't even fair. Not to her, at least.
"So, what do you say?" he asked. "Come with us?....Please?" He watched as she struggled to wrap her head around this new information.
"I mean, I don't even know what to say...."
"Just say yes. Come on, Jewels. Please don't turn this into something that is a bigger deal than it actually is. It's just a tour. Besides, we need you. You know we need you. I mean, we need someone to take care of us."
She starred back at him, clearly unconvinced. He threw his head back playfully and groaned, "Please?"
"You're seriously expecting me to just agree to this right now, aren't you?"
"How could you not? Its basically a paid vacation. A chance to see the entire country. I mean, you do realize that this will probably only happen once in your life."
She rolled her eyes. Typical of Ellington to be overly dramatic.
"I'm serious! You really need to do this." his eyes were pleading. "You need this. You like, never take any time off."
She looked down and played with the drawstring on her pajama pants and thought about it. She looked back up, her face serious, "I think I just need to...think about it a bit."
He fell back on the bed, throwing this hand to his forehead with an exaggerated sigh.
There was now a plea in her voice, "Oh come on, are you really gonna deny me just a little bit of time to think?"
He pointed at her, "Fine. I'm gonna give you the time. But you really need to start taking chances. You don't know what you are missing out on."
He kissed her on the head and got out of bed. He stretched his arms up and arched his back. As he did his shirt rode up a bit, exposing his midsection.
"Look..." he brought his arms back down. "I've got to head over and see the guys soon anyway. We've got to start working on some planning for this whole thing, so why don't you come with me and hang out for a bit....Maybe it will help you make your decision?"
She looked up at him, squinting and trying to decipher his underlying motives. "Alright, fine."
He bounced a bit, "Sweet. You'll love it. It'll be just like old times."
"Yeah, yeah." She waved her hand dismissively, "Now get the hell out. I've got to shower."
He threw on a pair of jeans and dashed out the door, leaving her to herself in the bedroom with an attached bath. She took her time getting up out of bed and getting ready. Not knowing how she felt about the whole situation didn't exactly sit well with her, which really didn't motivate her to move with any sense of urgency. In all honesty, she enjoyed the bit of quiet alone with her thoughts. After a morning like this, she needed time to contemplate.
