Your POV (First day of summer)
~~~~~~~~I was reading an amazing fantasy book when I heard a tap on my window. Confused, but then realizing that it happened last year, I was about to open it when mum came in.
"Hey, what do you want for- what are you doing?" She suddenly asked, seeing my outstretched hand.
I flushed. "I h-heard this noise- like a tap on the win-" There was another tap. I swear I saw a sort of alarm flash in Mum's eyes. She glanced at the window and back, panicky.
I turned my gaze to the window. What was beyond it? A person? A stranger? Someone Mum doesn't like? It happened again last year, and mum told me to ignore it. I want to know what it is.
"Mum, what's going on?" I snapped, impatient. "TELL me what's going on!" I don't care if I was being rude about it. I want to know why something's at the house every year.
Mum clearly saw the curiosity burning in my eyes. She hesitated for a long moment; I noticed her slowly walking away from the window.
"Mum!" I was getting annoyed. My mum can tell me anything!
She sighed. "Okay, fine. But let me open it." Open it? She came over and shakily opened the window. I couldn't see what was in front of her, because she was standing in my way.
Then, I saw it. "MUM, what is an owl doing at my window?" I blinked at the handsome tawney owl. It nibbled a piece of Mum's hair for a moment while Mum yet again hesitated.
"Here's your Hogwarts letter..."
Hogwarts? Is this a joke? Well, she looks serious. This can't be a joke. But, why couldn't she tell me sooner? I took the letter from her hand and read it:
Deputy HeadmistressI looked up. "So I'm going to a school after all?" I asked, excited. Yes! I always wanted to go to school! I wish I wasn't homeschooled. I'd get lots of friends. I remembered last summer when a bully fled, screaming when I burned his clothes. I remember the joyous and satisfied feeling I got.
Of course, I had gotten into trouble, and my satisfaction mostly covered up the puzzlement when I realized that I had started a fire with nothing but a shove. I had pushed the guy in a grill. We were having a barbeque with his family and he wouldn't quit bothering me, so I wouldn't call him much of a bully.
"Yes," Mum said after a moment. "But- this school- it has- you only get t-to go because you have magical blood in you. You are a witch."
"That's not nice!" I said, offended. How could my mum call me a witch?!
"No, you should be excited. You'll learn spells and potions at that school. And you'll make a lot of friends!" Mum said cheerfully. That's true, though.
But a school for witches and wizards? How is that even possible? What, do they wave around a stick and shout out words like "abracadabra?" I regarded this. "How am I a 'witch?'"
"I am what the witches and wizards call a Muggle. It means a nonmagical person," Mum explained. "Your Dad... was a wizard. I fell in love with him and he decided to l-leave me when he realized I was having a child."
I moved to comfort Mum, but she looked up strongly. Yeah, I get that strength from her.
"Well, do you understand now? Your Dad was a wizard, and I am a Muggle. You are a half-blood witch. Which means you have both Muggle and magical blood in you."
"I understand," I assured her. "But what did the letter mean by 'Please find enclosed a list of necessary books' and something else?"
"Here's the list," Mum said briskly. Her voice was no longer soft. It was now returning to normal as she forgot about Dad. She handed me the list which read:
"Well, yeah! How else would we perform magic?" Mum laughed. It was like she never spoke about Dad. Ugh! Why am I thinking about him? He left Mum and I! He is nothing but a bad memory.
I laughed, too, forcing thoughts of him out of my mind. "So, I really am going? This isn't a joke?" I know we kind of cleared this with the owl and list thing, but I still disbelieve it.
"Of course not!" Mum told me, still with the amused laughter on her face. It always gives me a nice, warm feeling inside that everything will go the way I want it to.
So, it is real, though I already knew that. I'm going to have so many friends, I think. I can't wait to go to my first school let alone a wizard school.
Do you like it so far? I mixed up the supply list, so it might not be good. Thanks for reading!
