A New Year

I stare at my backpack sitting on the sidewalk next to me. I wonder about what I should wear. Its the first day of my freshman year I should at least try not to look crappy for once. I mean I only have one other change of clothes and I've been wearing the same shorts and t-shirt for this entire summer. So I guess I'll go with the jeans and sweater. why did I think I had another choice?

I pick up my backpack and find the nearest public bathroom to get changed in. Staring in the mirror, I grab the hair ties off my wrist and put my brown hair into two braids. That way my hair wont look as greasy. I have bags under my eyes and my cheekbones are hollow and sunken in, I haven't eaten in over a week which is the norm for me. In case you haven't noticed yet, I'm homeless, have been for a year now. I glance at the clock in the bathroom and do a double take, my eye widen as I read the clock that clearly states 7:30. I quickly gather my things and run out of the bathroom and down the street to the high school.

It's so intimidating, I stride down the walkway, to catch my breath. My hands are trembling as I enter the gym and see all of the students. I soon realize that I'm just standing there and slowly walk over to the table with all of the schedules on it.

"What's your name?" asks one of teachers working behind the table.

"Um...S-Sidney Harper." I replied with shaking hands.

"Here you go." She hands me a piece of green paper with tiny black print.

I nod and walk away. I'm looking down at my schedule and run into something, I'm stumbling backwards and end up falling down right on my ass.

"God! Watch where you're going!" says a tall guy. He looks like the "it" guy around here. You know the guy that's all preppy and jockey and thinks he's better than everyone else.

"You watch it..." I say under my breath, standing up. I regret saying those words as soon as they leave my mouth.

"What was that bitch!?" He says, leaning down to get in my face. At this point the entire gym is staring at us.

"Sorry..." I mutter. God, his breath stinks. All the sudden a girl with black dreads and a nose ring bursts into the situation.

"Fuck off Peter! Get your caveman ass outta here!" She screams at him. He storms off, steam practically shooting out of his ears. She offers her hand and helps me up. "I'm Abby by the way."

"Sidney," I introduce myself. "Hey can you tell me where Mr.Hobbs room is?"

"Oh yeah totally. I'm going to the same class anyways." She says in a cheery voice.

Man from what I could tell she was pretty angry earlier, now she's like Mary fricken Poppins! We walk to the same room and Abby and I sit in the back. I guess there are some good people in the world.
