What Marley Baetts Can Do
Marley Baetts was interesting.Marley Baetts was the youngest of six children. Her oldest sister, Bonnie, was 18 and going to graduate that year. After Bonnie there was Clae, who was 17 and apparently hated everything. Then there was Jack and Elliot, who were twins of 15 and the most evil human beings on the Earth. Second youngest was 13-year-old Emma who liked to draw. And finally there was Marley, who was nine. Not to forget Sinbad and Hamlet, the cat and turtle.
Marley Baetts was also the only child of six to have peach blonde hair, like their father. Though Marley's was down to her armpits and therefore much longer than her dad's. Everyone else had light brown, with the exception of Bonnie, who's hair was more red than anything. But all of the children had their mother's hazel eyes and kind smile.
Marley Baetts was very, very fond of a stuffed elephant named Oswald. Oswald was a sort of grey-blue in color and was missing a little bit of his left ear. He had been Marley's very first birthday present and her best friend for as long as she could remember. One day Marley lost Oswald, and when couldn't find him anywhere she was sure the world was ending. Bonnie said Oswald probably went out for a walk and would be back soon, which was comforting until it began to rain. Marley sat out on the steps of the front porch, just under the ledge of their roof, waiting for Oswald to come back for a long time. A very long time. But just when she was about to go inside and ask her mother to tell the police Oswald was missing, Clae arrived back home. He walked on the paved drive way in front of the house, right up to Marley, and squatted down in front of her. It was raining on him. Then he'd smiled a little bit and said, "Look who I found," and from behind his back he held out Oswald. Marley had never been that happy in her entire life. She hugged Oswald, and then she hugged Clae. He even hugged her back. From that day on, Clae was Marley's favorite sibling. And Marley guessed that he must have liked her too. So maybe Clae only hated most things.
Marley Baetts was a tea drinker. She had her her brother Jack to thank for that. But she never took her tea without honey. After all, what kind of self-respecting nine year old would drink her tea plain and bitter.
Marley Baetts was fairly smart. No prodigy or genius, but she was smart. More than that, Marley was clever. Bonnie said she was more clever than Jack and Elliot combined and doubled. Marley knew that wasn't all the way true though because Elliot always beat her at checkers. Always. Except for one time, but he only let her win because he was in a fantastic mood.
Marley Baetts was not fond of horror movies. All of her other five siblings were though, so she often ran out of luck on movie nights. Once they watched a movie so absolutely terrifying that Marley hid under the kitchen table with Oswald and Sinbad. She was absolutely positive that something was going to jump out of the closet and eat her, but it turned out ok when Clae came and found her after everyone else left the living room. He let her and Oswald and Sinbad curl up against him on the couch with blankets, and Clae put his arm around Marley and turned on cartoons. Marley fell asleep pretty quick that night. Even though she was still pretty sure there were monsters out to get her, no monster in the world could get through Clae. Marley even thought that the next day she heard Bonnie telling Clae she took a picture of them passed out on the couch, and Clae threatening to put dye in Bonnie's shampoo. After all, no one could know Clae didn't hate everything.
Marley Baetts was not a good model. That's what her sister Emma said. She could not sit still for the life of her, which made it very difficult for Emma to practice portraits with her face. But Emma didn't really mind all that much because after every attempt, no matter how awful it came out, Marley would always say it looked exactly like her. That never failed to make Emma laugh.
