Upon exiting the gym, I barely notice Tooru's fan girls staring at me as I sprint towards the courtyard, eventually stopping at a random bench. I sit down gratefully.
"I like Tooru." I pause to let the words sink in. "I like Tooru... WHY?!" Burying my head in my hands, I begin to list everything wrong with that statement. "He's the most popular guy in the school, a hundred other girls have crushes on him, I'm living at his fucking house- is that incest? Whatever- and he saved me from my mom, and he's practically my only friend, and goddamnit Y/N why can't you just let it be?" I cry out, tugging at my hair.
"Tooru's... the best thing that's ever happened to me." I say, memories of his kindness drifting through my head. "I won't mess it up. He's... the only thing I want to keep intact." With steady resolve I stand to pace, plotting my next move with the utmost concentration.
"What am I going to say when Tooru questions me about the mini meltdown I had in the gym?" I mutter to myself, musing over it before formulating the perfect plan. "Aha! I'll just tell him that the person I like doesn't go to this school. Ah yes- genius! Y/N, you're fucking Einstein." I feel myself going slightly delirious, but who cares?
Perhaps the feeling of having some sort of control over the near future was enough to make me immensely happy.
Oh, if only I'd known how wrong I was.
A plan of action in mind, I head back to the gym, ready to take on whatever Tooru throws at me. Sure enough, he approaches me as soon as he sees me.
"Y/N!" Tooru exclaims, breaking conversation with Iwaizumi to confront me. "How dare you run away from me like that-"
"Sorry, it's just that I'm sensitive about-"
"Without asking me for love advice!"
"What?" I did not anticipate this. Oblivious to the fear practically written all over my face, Tooru points to himself with pride.
"As the most sought after boy in all of Japan, I know a thing or two about relationships-"
"Yeah I know you player-"
"Despite never dating anyone!" He finishes with equal confidence.
"Wha- you can't be serious." I look him over. "How have you not dated anyone before? You could probably be a model for goodness sake, and don't even try to deny the fact that you've been asked out by half the girls at Seijoh!" I accuse. "Moreover, how can you know so much about relationships if you've never been in one?"
Tooru eagerly brightens at my last remark and launches into a detailed explanation.
"You see, I have been in a long-term relationship...with Iwa-chan! His stubbornness has taught me to be persistent even when rejected, so I've basically mastered the art of seduction, flirtation, and desperation."
"And has it paid off?"
"Uhh... not exactly. He still calls me Shittykawa," Tooru says with a sigh. As he continues to ramble on, I can't help but groan in frustration.
Really? I ask God, glaring up at the heavens. Of all the people I had to fall for, it had to be this idiot? Unable to listen to him any longer, I hold up a hand to cut off Tooru's declaration of love for... Iwaizumi. Who's currently facepalming behind Tooru.
Yup.
"Listen Tooru, just forget it." I tell him, trying to change the subject so it never comes up again. "It's just that my crush is... um, my ex, actually! And he lives far away, so I have no hope of winning him back. Oh, bummer." I do my best to sound sad, but end up sounding... like a depressed prison guard.
Of course, Tooru sees through my bullshit. He may be dumb, but he's perceptive... sigh. "Liar." He claims. "You just want me to stop questioning you!"
"What? No way!" I protest. "Why would I lie to my only friend?" I add. Wow, Y/N. Resorting to dirty tactics, huh?
Tooru just gives me a knowing smirk, looking as though he's got me all figured out. But past his cocky expression, I catch a glimpse of something else... something that looks like disappointment, maybe even hurt. "If you say so. But since we're best friends and all, why don't you describe your so-called crush?"
Powered by a burst of spontaneity, I describe the first person that comes to mind.
It won't matter... right?
"His name is Tsukishima Kei! He goes to Karasuno." I tell him. "He's tall, blonde, skinny... and a little bit of a bitch, actually." I muse. "Oh, and he's really into dinosaurs. Yeah, I know what you're thinking- rawr, am I right?" I say, my chuckle turning into nervous laughter.
Tooru sends me a skeptical glance. "Yeah, definitely wasn't thinking that. But Tsukishima Kei, huh? Why'd you guys break up if he's so... rawr?" He teases.
I physically cringe, wondering what compelled me to say that awful word. "He found out I was unpopular in school?" I try.
It's like a fuse was lit. Tooru's eyes flare up like forest fires, and his cheeks turn two shades darker. "WHAT?!" He exclaims, more distraught than I've ever seen him. Despite his fury, Tooru's next gesture is surprisingly warm. He places a hand on my shoulder, his eyes softening ever so slightly. "I don't know who this Tsukishima Kei thinks he is, but he never deserved you. You're kind, and smart, and funny, and beautiful. So try not to let him get to you, alright?"
It's actually really moving, but I almost scoff out loud when I realize me getting dumped is a believable scenario to him.
Then without warning, Tooru smiles at me; mischief dancing on his lips. "I'll take care of this." He assures me, a bitter note tainting his usual carefree tone.
"What-"
I'm interrupted by a familiar voice. "Oi, Trashykawa!" Tooru and I turn in unison to see Iwaizumi emerging from the gym. "You wanna bet on karaoke tonight? 10 bucks says I get the high score-"
"CHANGE OF PLANS IWA-CHAN!" Tooru declares, shutting down the proposition like Costco shutting it's walls during the apocalypse. "We're going to Karasuno to confront the jerk who dumped Y/N, and we're going to make him pay!" Not even waiting for a response, Tooru starts to old-lady-power-walk towards the parking lot.
"Wait, how are we going to get there? We can't just walk!" I call after him. A low chuckle escapes from Iwaizumi's mouth, leaving me concerned for his mental wellbeing.
"Just watch and see." He instructs. Confused, I watch Tooru approach a female third year about to get into her car.
"Aika-chan!" She swivels around, jaw hanging wide open. I recognize the look immediately- it's the, 'Holy shit, Oikawa's talking to me' look. Unable to respond, Aika just stares up at the famous setter. "Can you drive me and a few friends to Karasuno high?" Tooru asks, winking for good measure. It's the final killing blow.
"O-of course, Oikawa!" She breathes, awestruck. With an air of finality, Tooru looks back at Iwaizumi and I.
"Let's go settle things with Tsukishima-chan." He says, eyes filled with an unordinary grimness.
Yay! The next chapter is my favorite, so I can't wait to edit it. However, my Sakusa Story readers are getting impatient, so I gotta work on that first... I'd love it if you guys could check it out if you have time. :)
