~Eliana POV~

"Get up Eliana!" The loud pounding on my door makes me slightly open my eyes to reveal the bright morning light, I squint my eyes looking around my messy room.

The only time I could actually have time to myself is always interrupted by my obnoxious eight-year-old brother. "Mom is gonna get mad." He holds out the last word which annoys me even more.

I throw the blankets off myself and stomp towards my door yanking it open to reveal Max. "Max if you knock one more time I'm going to r-." Before I could finish my sentence he storms off to the kitchen. I glare at his back. He knows when I wake up I'm not in the best mood. Let's just say I'm not a morning person.

I slam the door smirking to myself as I grab my toiletry bag and head towards the bathroom. Hopefully, I could get a could get a couple minutes to myself. I strip down my clothes and step inside the filthy tub. No matter how many times I clean this bathroom it always becomes dirty, no OxiClean could fix that. I turn on the water hoping I'll get some hot water but today just happens to be my unlucky day and I am stricken by the cold water making me screech and jump back.

Eventually I adjust to the water temperature and I quickly wash my body and hair not wanting to spend any more time in the icy water. After drying my body I throw on some old jeans my best friend gave me two years ago and I put an old hoodie over my bra.

I wish I had more clothes, I'm tired of wearing the same things over and over again but I shouldn't complain, at least I have clothes. Where is that stupid brush? I search through the cabinets trying to my find my blue brush to take out my tangles.

10 minutes later I found my brush and quickly brushed my hair and teeth.

I look at the time noticing I have only 5 minutes to leave the house, I know I'm going to be late. I put on some mascara and concealer. I usually do more but not today.

I run down the stairs and see my mom knocked out on the couch with a wine glass on the carpet and an opened wine bottle. I grab my backpack and quietly walk towards her leaving a peck on her forehead and wrapping her in a blanket.

"Things will get better mom," I whisper to her, gently brushing her hair out of her face.

I hope things do get better. I thought to myself as I walk to school. Since going to be late anyways I'll take my time.

It's hard seeing my mom like this. When my dad left 6 years ago it really made it difficult on us. My mom was a single mother with a 2-year-old boy and an 11-year-old daughter, she had to work full time as a waitress. A couple months later she found a perfect job. It paid well and we were doing great. We got to move into a 3 bedroom apartment, we started at a new school. It felt like I could finally start over with everything until my mom lost her job a few months ago.

Luckily, we were still able to keep the apartment since my mom went back to working as a waitress. Also since I'm older I'm able to work with her over there. But bills, after bills, started coming in and we were back where we were in the beginning.

Then my mom discovered the world of "drinking your problems away." She thought it helped but really it just made everything harder. Now it's as if I'm the one keeping this family together, the glue I guess.

I was so into my thoughts I didn't even realize I made it to school already. I walk inside and head to the office to get my late slip. I don't think the secretary likes me very much since I'm always late.

"I see you decided to show up Ms. Jameson." She looks at me pursing her lips.

"I always show up.." I shrug my shoulders earning a scoff from her. She rips the paper off and signs it handing it to me. "Thanks." I mutter. All I get is her waving me off. How much hate I have for this lady, Ms. I don't have a boyfriend and like to take it out on young teenagers.

Second period is about to start so I might as well just wait in the hallway until the 1st period ends. I lean on my locker sliding down and sitting on the floor. Playing with the slip, I begin dozing off. A few minutes later white Jordans appear in front of me. How didn't I notice someone walking up to me? I look up and my eyes lock with gorgeous brown eyes. Xander Lopez. He's a probably one of the "Hottest boys in the school," my best friend would say, he's a Hispanic dude, with tan skin, brown messy hair, and brown eyes any girl would fall for.

"Shouldn't you be in class...Eliana." He asks smirking. How does this guy know my name? He licks his lips, sticking his hand out to help me up. Usually any girl would find this attractive but it was honestly disgusting, I'm not some piece of meat but I gladly take the offer and he lifts me up to my feet.

"I don't think it concerns you...Xander," I told him walking away.

"Preciosa, you're a little sassy." I turn my head to look at him, biting his lip eyeing my body. "Nothing I can't handle." He smirks one more time. Who does this bot think he is? Hottest guy but biggest douche.

"Xander, you're really not my type sorry buddy." I fake smile and walk away. I left him with his jaw dropping to the floor.

The day went by in a flash, went to all my classes met up with Jeniah, my best friend, every passing period and day just went by like any other day. I was waiting by the front door for Jeniah since she usually drops me off at work every day. (A/N Jeniah is pronounced Jah-nee-ah)

"Hey El" I heard Jeniah from behind me and turned around to see her. Jeniah is gorgeous compared to me. She has silky red hair, blue eyes that could make any guy fall for her. And she has the sweetest personality. Which is why we are best friends, when I first moved here she was the first person to actually say hi to me in class. Ever since then, we started talking more and more and we eventually became best friends.

"Hey. Are you sure you can take me? It's fine if you can't. I know you-" I was cut off by her.

"Eli, it's fine. I take you every day." She said laughing and walking to her car with me following behind her.

"So J, how's Carter?" I asked excitedly because recently she heard that Carter, the sweetest guy you could ever meet who just happens to be the most annoying kid ever, might ask her out.

"Well..." She shuts the door in the car and turns to me. "He asked me out!" She screams!

"Jeniah!!" I scream back. We both just start screaming like 12-year-old girls when we see a cute boy.

"What did he say?" I ask as she starts driving towards the diner which isn't on the best side of town.

"He asked me to the movies and he's bringing Xander with. Xander asked him, to ask me, to ask you!" She yells again. My smile immediately drops and she notices. "What's wrong?"

"No way in hell I'm going Jeniah." She knew I was serious because I used her first name.

"Why not?" She asks pouting.

"because he's a jerk," I said firmly and looked out the window. She blows out a deep breath and murmurs a "fine." Thank you Jeniah, thank you.

After a few minutes of silence and the faint sound of music on the radio, we get to the diner. She parks out in the front and I open door turning to her. "Thanks, J, see ya tomorrow." I blow a kiss but before the door fully shuts I hear her scream a "Think about it, Eli!" This girl can't take a no.

I walk into the diner and get greeted by my fellow co-workers. I smile back and head towards the back to start my shift. I put my apron on and get to work.

The doors ring signaling someone just entered the diner, I grab my notepad and pen to get their orders. Repeating this about 15 times.

A few tables later I'm finally finished with my shift by 10pm. I grab the keys from the hook and grab my bag with. I quickly sign out and walk outside to wait for my mom to pick me up.

I don't see her outside so I pull out my phone to text her. I read the bright screen.

Mom: It's Max, mom is drinking again, so walk home.

Ugh, of course. The first time I have to walk home is when my shift ends at 10 pm when it 's completely dark outside.

Great.
