Author's Note - Please Read xx
This is just a teaser chapter as the rest of the book won't be coming out until I finish 'The Lone Survivor', because if I write two stories at once I get sidetracked and never update either book regularly. Loads of you have been asking if I was gonna write this book at all, so I thought I'd give you a little something until I get round to starting the rest. Thank you for being so patient though and not pushing me to write, I really do genuinely appreciate it xx

I'll probably change the title later too, I just named it 'Phoenix' for now so there'd be no confusion ^.^

Kaine was bored. And that was never a good thing for anyone.

"I need a new mate!" He growled to himself, slamming his fists down on the table in front of him, making his second beta, Jasmine, jump out of her skin. Sam, his first, just rolled his eyes. He was used to Kaine's seemingly random bursts of anger.

"It's your fault you killed your true mate" he chided, swiftly dodging the pens that were launched his way. "She was a keeper, that one. Totally obsessed with a psychotic shifter like you, I mean, you gotta give the chick some credit!"

"Shut up before you join her!" Kaine hissed, baring his sharp canines at Sam, who chuckled in response.

"You wouldn't dare, I'm your little bro! You love me too much, and you haven't killed me yet! Besides, you couldn't even if you tried" he mocked, ducking as more stationary was lobbed at his head. He could've sworn he saw the stapler fly past, much to his amusement.

His brother had one of the shortest fuses imaginable, and sometimes it was like walking on eggshells, trying to keep him placated. Sam wasn't scared of him, though. How could he be scared of the one person responsible for him being alive and unharmed? He owed his older brother everything he had.

"Jasmine. Grab his file and show me his picture again" Kaine commanded, and Jasmine immediately scurried over to a pile of paperwork, quickly delivering it to Kaine, who began to flick through the pages.

The book consisted of all the intelligence we have on Phoenix Harris, gathered by shifters of this pack. There was another file beside it with the name 'Robin Harris' on the cover, but a big red cross marked the file as useless to Kaine, who's sights were now set on the elder of the two twins due to certain 'circumstances'. There were other files too, but Phoenix was Kaine's current infatuation. His current 'goal'.

Kaine stopped looking through the notes and stared at the image of the boy. He knew this was the one he wanted, right at this moment at least. Usually, he got bored within a week, killed the unlucky boy he'd chosen and moved on. But something about this boy made him think he'd be a bit more fun. He may even survive the week. He may even become his mate...

No- he was getting carried away. Not yet, not yet. He knew he'd become bored, he always did. And the silly thing Sam kept mentioning, love, was never going to happen. What is love, anyway? Isn't a mate just someone you lust after, a person for you to control?

"Should I inform the guards to escort Mr Harris here?" Jasmine asked timidly, eying Kaine as if he was going to strike her if she moved a muscle. However, her question was merely dismissed with a wave of the shifter's hand.

"No, this time I want to retrieve him myself. I killed his mother, see, so my presence should be enough to make him come quietly. Warlocks can be such a handful, don't you think?" He paused, chuckling to himself. "Oh, and Jasmine?"

"Y-yes Sir?" The girl stuttered, obviously fearful of the man she served.

"Take this to the kitchens and tell the chef to slip this into the warlock's food every morning and night after he arrives. It'll keep his powers weak. Can't have him getting too rowdy, not that I can't handle it"

Jasmine bowed quickly, hesitantly taking the bag of pills from Kaine before scurrying from the room, quiet as a mouse.

"Sam, you are also dismissed" Kaine said lazily, flicking his hand towards the door. But Sam didn't move.

"You have a different look in your eyes today. Do you believe this warlock is the one you've been searching for?" He asked, curiosity lacing his tone.

"I haven't been searching for anyone, only somebody who I can make bend to my will, a perfect submissive. But you know I love a challenge, and what's more challenging than a boy from the head warlock family with a big personality? I bet it'll take a lot of careful control to make him mine completely, and it's the struggle that I love. How quickly will he break, I wonder? But as I said, you have been dismissed, and you must obey me whether you are my brother or not"

Sam sighed, turning his back on his brother, but pausing as he got to the door.

"I know it is not my place, but please try your best not to hurt another potential. You aren't him, so you don't need to be like him"

"I said you are dismissed" Kaine growled through gritted teeth, glaring daggers into his sibling's back.

Deciding not to push his luck, Sam nodded and left the room too. Cracking his knuckles, Kaine leaned back in his chair, still examining the photo of the young warlock.

"This is going to be very interesting" he murmured, a smirk playing on his lips. "Very interesting indeed"
