A certain emptiness took Dani's' place and convinced me to try to have a nice time. After all, if I am here until 6, and the clock just struck 2, there's time to be wasted. Leaving the sad, deflated funnel cake aside, I decided to make my way clumsily onto the floor. No one was here, it was a Monday, and whilst summer vacation was full of instagram photos of Hawaii for my classmates, mine was full of AP prep. I started to skate, trying to balance myself with the aid of the air around me. Not proving very efficient. "We are closing in 30 minutes, I repeat, we are closing in 30 minutes, please turn in your skates promptly." Damn It it's the Fourth of July.
"I'm the only one here you know." I responded, upset not at the random guy screaming through the microphone, but at myself. Alone on the Fourth of July. The only fireworks I would see are the sparks from the toaster oven my aunt so desperately tried to fix. I skated up to the carpet and shuffled awkwardly to the empty booth to place my skates onto it. The same guy who so loudly exclaimed the rinks closing made his way skillfully and cockily toward the back. I won't say that he was cute. He wasn't. Matter of fact he must have been about 40. This isn't a cheesy story. Who do you think I am? I then made my way to the entrance and texted my aunt.

\Me: can you pick me up?/

\auntie: where are you?/

\Me: roller rink/

\auntie: not with Dani right?/

\Me: no/

I wasn't lying.

\auntie: I can't until 6 babe, I'm at work/

\Me: K/

\auntie: did you just K me?/

\Me: I'll see you later*/

\auntie: that's better :)/

What was I going to do for 3 and a half hours? I made my way to the same bell that has drained my mind of all joy the last 10 years. When the strong scent of maple syrup took the form of a human being just in time to bump into me. I looked up and scanned his face, in pursuit of finding even the slightest similarity to anyone I've previously met, my ex. "I'm so sorry, are you alright?" Still staring dumbly at his face I snapped out of my trance, "what?" That was aggressive. "Are you alright?" "Sure." I watched as his jawline decorated with a slight stubble danced while he chewed his mint gum. Not a good combo with the maple syrup. "What are you doing here alone?" It talks. "I'm just waiting." "It's closing time he answered, a brown curl descended onto his forehead. "Well, what are you doing here?" I asked rhetorically in defense of his obnoxious good looks. "Paolo told me you were here, we need to talk." "Oh" if Dani were here I know what she would say. Fuck.
