*Flashback*

" To celebrate your sixteenth birthday, I have a surprise," Kathleen announced.

Allyson just gulped.

" I will instruct you on how to fight monsters," Kathleen explained.

Allyson breathed relief. She had been excited for this. Kathleen was infamous for "monster slaying", and Allyson wanted in on the secret.

" Many say I have a secret. And I do. I am human."

Allyson blinked, not comprehending.

" Monsters are...animals. They have instincts that control them, that makes them dangerous," Kathleen pursed her lips, unsure how to continue.

Allyson had known "monsters" in training, they hadn't seemed much different. Except for being better at everything physical. (Despite Allyson's best efforts.)

" Humans rule because we are not bound by such rules. Rules of nature. It makes us masters of the animal kingdom. Our minds, our ability to sense our instincts and control them," Kathleen attempted to explain.

Allyson made disbelief plain on her face. As disrespectful as it was, Allyson was offended at the way she was talking about living creatures.

" We must take advantage of such weaknesses. Take vampires. They love blood. It's what powers their magic. To move fast, have super strength and super senses. For such an exchange to work, their soul is "inside out" and like magnets, they are attracted to blood, and through it, a soul. A soul that is not "inside out"," Kathleen elaborated.

" How can I use this?" Allyson boldly asked.

Kathleen just smiled. " That is why it's great to be human. Allyson, be creative. Think magnets."

Magnets? Souls? Allyson couldn't put them together.

" Maybe you need incentive?" Kathleen asked.

Incentive.

Suddenly, with no warning a being flashed across Allyson's peripheral vision and pain sliced into her arm. Allyson felt the soul to identify the being. It was different, not just in shape or texture, but with what it was made of. It was inside out. A vampire.

The vampire was coming back, Allyson could feel it's soul. Allyson attempted to fight by taking out her knife, but it was gone.

" Too slow," A voice whispered as nail cut into her throat.

Allyson needed to think. To learn. That was how Kathleen taught, her students had to learn, or they died. That's why she had a perfect record.

Magnets. Opposites attract. Allyson's eyes widened, that was it! If the souls were the same, then they would repel.

And Allyson could work soul magic.

Burns flashed through her, but she didn't say anything, she knew how transforming a soul felt. Allyson could help falling to her knees though, this was like no other transformation.

" Oh...the human's giving up without a fight," The voice was like background music.

Then Allyson felt something cold on her neck, and it was gone. Her eyes popped open.

The vampire was just lying there, soul knife in hand. In a few seconds she was headless, as if she hadn't already died.

-------------------------

Allyson had perfected her vampire hunting technique since then. Her eyes automatically closed, she needed her senses and her eyes were useless against vampires.
