The Unexpected

You sighed staring at the glowing screen of your phone. It was awfully late in the day. Too late for breakfast and too early for lunch you rolled over sprawled on your bed. The apartment you lived in was small. Smaller than small but you had to make do. It was depressing thinking about home as you found yourself missing your home life now and again which was why you felt that it was the reason you could practically sleep the days away.

Perhaps it was the determination in your mind or the pang of not wanting to waste another day as you lazily roll out of the bed slowly making sure to be careful not to bump into the wardrobe or trip over the laundry basket that was your bedroom floor. You rummaged through your wardrobe to find something comfortable to wear and then left for the bathroom.

Your stomach grumbled in protest as you left the apartment locking the door. You checked the door handle again to make sure it was locked. There was no particular reason to but it just comforted you. Call it paranoia but you didn't want just anyone walking into your house even though it was extremely unlikely. Usually you would have gone to work now. It was nothing official. Only a part-time job at a cafe but the coffee company had decided to upgrade the branch and renovate it to attract even more customers as it was showing signs of good business so currently you were out of a job. You didn't mind. It allowed you to rest and sleep more but it was lonely. If only you had bothered to make a friend at your workplace even though the others tended to practice the art of ignoring each other.

You sigh while getting rid for the day. Dressed in casual clothes you decide that some fresh air might lighten the dull mood. It's not as if the day was going to get duller so you might as well try to make it somewhat interesting. As you leave you notice how light your pockets are. Searching around you realise that you had forgotten your phone.

"Where did I leave it this time?"

Looks like going for a walk is going to take longer than expected. Not that you particularly minded since you had nothing else to do. It was one of those days where you wanted to be productive but you didn't want to do any work  so a walk is somewhat in between. Tiring yet effortless as walking is a natural thing everyone does.

You calmly make your way to the nearby park which was brimming with children. The playground was lively with the shouts of who was 'it' and who scored a goal. You smiled feeling the sun's rays stroke your body.

'Ah yes this strange feeling...it's sunlight'. You chuckled at your small joke to yourself.

You sat down under the looming branches of an ancient looking sycamore tree. Sunlight filtered through the branches leaving spots across the ground. You couldn't resist but take a picture of the branches. Perhaps this could be your new background after you add in a fictional character or two.

You huffed in mild amusement and frustration as every picture you took was slightly fuzzy or blurry. Maybe it was the camera quality or maybe your unstable hand. Who knew?

You flicked through the pictures you had in your phone. The image of the branches long forgotten as you smiles and laughed at some of the saved memes you had.

Your recent photos were of the most adorable internet meme: Longcat. He was so cute and long. The longest cat. So sweet you thought to yourself. The slight problem is now you've filled up most of your phone storage. There's no way your deleting your precious memes.

Momentarily there's the thought of deleting some of your games off your phone but you shake your head. No way were you giving up the 10th place of the leaderboard just because you needed more space on your phone. Too much time and effort had been wasted on this and no way were you just going to delete it.

You jump at the notification sound from your phone. The sound so sudden you almost dropped your phone. You had yet to crack the screen of your phone and it was a miracle that it had survived so long. One of these days out of nowhere you're going to drop it on the carpet and it'll crack. Things like this had happened to other people, you just pray that it doesn't ever happen to you.

You sighed at the notification. It was another one telling you to go to a musical that you knew would be sold out in matter of seconds. You had no idea why they sell so fast but that hasn't made you any less determined to get a ticket, only you were disappointed every time as you were always too late. You've heard the smaller ones produced by a certain company were good not only because of the eye candy but the amazing acting by said eye candy. You've avoided spoilers like the plague so you have no idea what this eye candy looks like. In fact you avoid the Internet every time after the release of the play until the spoilers go away. Although you cannot deny that it's been tempting and hard not to scroll just a little bit more down or click the link below. Who ever this eye candy is, they had some avid fans.

"Meow!" The sudden noise making you drop your phone as something soft and furry rubbed against your leg. A mangled stray pressed it's face against your leg. The sweet thing managed to sneak up on you and attack you with its cuteness. You gently pet it's head as it purrs deeply. Your other hand picks up the phone, which seemed to frown at the neglect, but before you could stand, the stray places it's pink padded paw on top on your hand. You gazed at it with sympathy noticing the scraps of a dusty collar. It looked to have been bitten off at some point, but it's fur was so tangled, the collar was stuck. There were noticeable scratch marks around it's neck as well as missing pieces of fur all over it body. The animal must have gotten into a fight. You gazed at it sadly.

You always wanted an animal but your parents were allergic to the fur. You'd adopt the cat right now if you could however you doubt you could earn enough for the both of you. There just wasn't enough time to have another person in your life not unless you somehow got locked in your apartment but that would never happen in real life.

"Mew!" It pleaded as if reading your thoughts. On closer inspection the stray's left eye seemed to be sealed shut. Your heart soared with empathy wanting to take the cat home. Maybe you could just feed it some scraps from your left over dinner. It was probably better than whatever the stray found in the trash.

"Ok you're coming with me little one" you say softly as if talking to a child. It mewled happily as you picked it up. It still seemed domesticated which could have meant it was abandoned recently.

"Maybe I should give you to a shelter" you mutter your thoughts aloud reaching your door. You had taken a little detour on your way home. Thankfully a check up at the vet's was free and so it was a little late in the day when you arrived home. You smiled unlocking the front door. The groomed stray hopped out of your arms and paused at the door.

"You can go in if you want. Haha it's been awhile since I cleaned up". The cat answered with a mew and began to roam its surroundings. For a stray it was miraculously well behaved. Perhaps it did have an owner. You jump at the sudden sound of something sliding through your mail flap. Was it international scare (Y/N) day or something? There on the door mat was a sleek black slab at which the stray hissed at the offending object and proceeded to flee into your bedroom.

"It's just a phone" you call to the creature while turning it on. Who would do this? Is this some sort of practical joke? "What? Downloading...? Wait what is this?"

(A/N: Just a small Mystic Messenger fanfic that's been sitting in my storage collecting dust for months now. This is just me practicing some good old second person. I'm honestly curious as to how one would go about writing one. I might write more Mystic Messenger.)
