Breathe.
Just breathe.
I took a deep breath and started walking towards the gate. The sound of chattering teenagers growing louder.
Once I got to the gates I could see the actual amount of students.
Holy shit.
There were people everywhere. It felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest.
As I passed the gate the bell rang.
All the students started to scatter, except for the few who just kept chatting with friends.
My first class was English in Room 43. Vaguely remembering where it was, from open house, I started to make my way there. I kept my head down, looking up every once in a while to make sure I wasn't going to bump into anyone or thing.
I stayed close to the walls as I walked down the hallways. It was easier to dodge the people who didn't know what walking was.
As I turned the corner someone ran into me.
I grunted, managing to catch myself. Standing up straight I glanced at the guy who ran into me. He looked surprised.
"Ah shit. Sorry man," he mumbled before continuing to run down the hall.
I took a deep breath and began walking again.
Jesus Christ. My chest was really tight and I could feel myself starting to freak out. It hasn't even been 10 minutes and I'm already losing it.
Fuck. Fuck. Fucking fuckity fuck.
I kept trying to get my breathing back to normal as I reached the classroom. The door was propped open by a stool so I assumed it was okay to go in. There were a few kids already in seats but I couldn't see the teacher anywhere. I walked to the back of the class and and sat in one of the empty seats.
My breathing had calmed down by the time all the seats were filled.
All of the students were here but the teacher was still nowhere to be seen.
"Aye. Where's Mrs. Meagan?" some kid called out. The class then broke into chatter about where our teacher was.
A dull thud followed by the word 'fuck' quieted everyone.
A head popped up from underneath the teachers desk. Who I can only guess was Mrs. Meagan. She stood up and fixed her hair.
"Excuse my language," she cleared her throat. "I am Mrs. Meagan. Your English teacher for the year. Um.. Would anyone like to do an ice breaker?"
Oh fuck me.
Ice breakers were the fucking Devil himself.
Nobody responded except one girl who raised her hand.
Why?
"Only you?" she questioned, not really sounding surprised.
"What? Oh god no. I was just wondering why you were underneath the desk."
"Oh. Um.. I was... not taking a nap... Anyways, no ice breaker then. I am going to pass out a paper. Just sign where your name is printed and then pass it to the next person."
She gave the paper to the person closest to her. It was passed from person to person until it reached me. I signed it and, since I was the last person it was handed to, I ended up having to get up and give it back to her.
