Carmen's POV

I heard the timer for the cookies go off and rushed into the kitchen. I took all 25 dozen cookies out of the oven. I set them down to cool. Then I heard the dryer stop and I went to fold all the laundry and put the stuff from the washer into the dryer. All the laundry baskets were full and I picked up as many as I could to go deliver them to the right owners.

I had just delivered the last of the laundry when I heard the front door open. I cringed. I ran down into the kitchen and brought up the cookies. They all immediately gravitated towards them and ate. Not a word from them. It was my 16th birthday, yet no one cared. I had a letter for every birthday up to my 16th from my mom. She always had a gift in it. I wonder what it would be this time.

I ran down to my room, more like a cupboard, and threw open the door. I marched right over to the loose panel in the wall and opened it. Inside, I pulled out a letter addressed to me. The glue had faded away and I opened it easily. I pulled out the paper inside and read.

Dear Carmen,

I'm sorry, baby, but this'll be the last letter. This year's gift will be extra special. I wonder how you look like now. Is your hair in brown waves like mine? One thing I do know is you still have Carlos's eyes, your father's eyes. The baby sitting on my lap as I write this is beautiful. Please dear, don't forget me. Keep all my letters in a special spot.

How has the pack been treating you? I hope your okay. If they hurt you, go to your father. He will always help you, I know. I wonder, have you found your mate yet? It's a wonderful feeling when you do. The first time you touch him/ her, the first time you kiss, it's like heaven on earth. If only, I were still on earth while you aged.

I miss you already, Carmen. I do love you, you know. I always will. In life, and death. It's a shame that I'm so sick. I would give almost anything to stay here with you longer but, I must leave. I will always be watching you when I'm with the Moon Goddess. Just stay alive, Carmen San Diego.

Love,

Mama.

Tears pricked in the corners of my eyes as I read. I turned the envelope upside down and something metallic fell out. I picked it up. It was my mother's wedding ring on a chain. I put it around my neck and tucked it underneath my shirt. I ran back to the kitchen to get started on the birthday cake for the Alpha. Yeah, we were born on the same day.

I baked a strawberry one, which happened to be his favourite, and ignored the requests for other pack members preferences. It was done after about three hours except for one thing. I put up a custom cake topper that said 'Curtis Grant, Alpha of Star Moon'.

I took the towering cake upstairs and set it down on the counter. Immediately, I was yelled at by one girl who had asked for vanilla. "Strawberry happens to be Curtis's favorite, you know." I said. I received a sharp slap and went sprawling. I heard a hush settle over the crowd as Curtis came downstairs.

"Oh look, cake! Strawberry too! my favourite!" he said. I smirked and watched as he read the topper. Phew! sneak off so we can rest. My wolf, Maia, said. We can't yet. The Alpha has to find his mate. I said. She grunted but made no reply. "Who made the cake?" he asked. I nervously stepped forward. "I did, Alpha." I said. He looked at me and I felt sparks. His hand reached out for mine and touched it. More sparks. We were mates.

I looked up into his face. It held disgust and horror. "Eww. You're my mate? The Moon Goddess made a mistake with you. I, Curtis Grant, reject you, Carmen Dodge, as my mate." He spat. My heart broke and I could hear Maia howl. "I accept your rejection." I whispered and ran out, unable to face my ex-mate.
