"So, how was your meeting?" asked Sam before gobbling up her first bite.
"It was good! All they really talked about was what tryouts were going to be like this week."
"Same here. Does track put the 1st years on teams at the end of the week too?"
"Yup. We know if we make junior varsity or varsity right after Friday's practice."
"God, this is so exciting! I hope all of us make varsity."
"We will," said Oliver while holding out a fist to Sam.
Sam smiled and bumped her own fist against his.
Sam and Oliver continued eating when Jack eventually strolled into the cafeteria and set his things down next to Oliver.
"Yo! How was student council?" asked Oliver.
Jack glared at Oliver with angry, exhausted eyes.
"Ooo... Not good?"
"No, it was fine. It's just what I wanted. But... there's this evil, savage 2nd year girl who is currently the vice president, Amanda Flores" saying her name in a mocking voice, "And since VP is the position I want for next year, I'm in her group."
"What's so bad about her?" asked Sam.
"She's the most aggravating person I've ever met! Okay, so I had a small interview with her because we're in the same group. It was just to talk about things the VP does to make sure it was the position I wanted to commit to. But before I knew it, we were arguing about our views on how things were run. She's so fucking stubborn about everything! I could just--" Jack stopped talking and pretended he was strangling someone.
Sam and Oliver laughed at Jack's explanation. Sam had never seen Jack so worked up before; he always seemed to have a composed attitude about everything. In a way, it was refreshing to see him get knocked off course by someone other than Oliver.
After Jack calmed down, he got his dinner and ate with Sam and Oliver. When all three finished, they headed back to their room. They flopped their things onto the floor and started unpacking.
Oliver sat at his desk and pulled out a textbook with a worksheet inside it. Sam noticed him scratching in the answers with frustration and snuck up behind him to see what was making him so irritated. She placed her hands on his shoulders and leaned over his back to take a peek.
"Ooooo chem huh?"
"Yeah," he said in a dull tone, "What teacher gives homework on the first day! This is a normal level class too! And it's my worst subject!"
Sam let out a mischievous chuckle as a thought crossed her mind. She leaned forward and transferred more weight into Oliver's shoulders.
"That reminds me, is Honey in any of your classes?" badgered Sam.
Sam felt Oliver's body twitch at the sound of Honey's name.
"Ahhhh, so that's a yes," she teased, "Does that make little Ollie embarrassed? You get to see her everyd--Mmph!" getting cut off by Oliver cramming his pillow into her face to shut her up.
Sam pushed the pillow away and exclaimed, "Little Ollie is embarrassed!" and then shoved the pillow back into his face.
Sam immediately backed away after so she was out of his reach. Oliver stood up with the pillow and got ready to throw it again. Sam grabbed a textbook off of her desk to use for a shield. When Oliver released the pillow, Sam smacked it away with the textbook.
"Eumph!"
Sam and Oliver turned their heads to Jack's side of the room and saw him sitting at his desk with the pillow smashed against his face. Jack took the pillow off his face and glared at Sam and Oliver. They both chuckled awkwardly and attempted to retreat.
Before they knew it, Jack hurled the pillow back at Oliver, making him lose his balance and fall onto his bed.
Sam started laughing at Oliver after he got nailed.
"Hah! Serves you righ--Oof!" getting cut off again, this time by Jack's powerful throw.
Within seconds, the trio underwent a full fledged pillow fight. Pillows flew threw the air and papers sailed off of their desks from the whooshes of air being created.
When the pillow fight ended, they collapsed onto the ground, panting from moving around so much.
"Well, that was productive," said Sam.
"We managed to make our room into a disaster," added Oliver.
The trio laughed and stood up to begin cleaning up their mess.
As Sam was gathering some of the papers, she picked up the one Oliver was working on before the fight. As Sam was looking over his work, her eyes widened in disbelief. She looked up at Oliver with a dumbfounded expression.
"Oliver... What the hell is this?!"
"What? My homework?"
"What're these answers?!"
"I just followed how the textbook explained it," he said innocently.
Sam looked over at Jack with a face asking for an explanation.
"I've tried to teach him," said Jack with a shrug, "but he doesn't wanna listen to how I explain things."
"That's because you're lectures are boring!" said Oliver, bluntly.
Jack looked at Oliver with an offended expression and Oliver turned away with crossed arms.
"Oliver c'mere. I'm gonna try teaching you," said Sam while walking over to her desk with Oliver's paper.
Oliver strolled over to Sam and hovered over her while she explained the steps to solving a problem on the sheet. She handed him a pencil and told him to try it again. Oliver leaned over her desk and attempted to solve it while Sam gave him hints throughout the process. When he finished, he slid the paper over to Sam and waited for her response.
"Yep! You got it right!"
"What?! Really?!" exclaimed Oliver, "That was so easy to understand! You explain things so clearly Sam."
Jack's mouth hung open from the complete shock that Oliver actually understood.
"You can do it if you really try though!" encouraged Sam.
"Nah, it was probably because you taught me so well. Hey, if it's not too out of your way, could you tutor me when I need help?" asked Oliver shyly.
"Of course! I love chem so it's not out of the way at all. Ask me whenever!"
Oliver smiled in relief and thanked Sam. Meanwhile, Jack was sitting across the room still unable to process how Oliver understood the content so well.
After a few minutes, the trio went back to cleaning up their room. When they finished, Sam continued to help Oliver with his homework while Jack read a book in bed. Eventually the day came to an end and they went to bed to prepare for the next day.
To be continued...
