PROLOGUE
Some say that heroes are born. However, I don't agree. I say that they're born in the flames of travesty and disaster. Why do I say this? Well, I don't mean to brag but you're looking at one.
Who am I, you ask? I was created under the name of Alpha and this is my story. With a pulse roaring in his ears loud as thunder, the creation known as Alpha stalked out of his holding cell with steps silent enough for him to be mistaken for a spectre. Every miniscule sound and motion was absolutely, terrifyingly nerve-wracking for him.
But he *couldn't* cave now. He'd invested too much time and effort into this. The male had made several escape attempts before but this one… This one was different. This time, he would know the delicious, glorious taste of freedom or die trying.
Foolishly losing himself to his thoughts, Alpha was brought to his knees with a grunt as he was met by a security guard's baton to his gut. He heard the guard's movements towards him to abuse him further but that strike had reaffirmed the man's purpose as he pulled himself upright. Armed with only his bare hands, Alpha lunged at his unsuspecting opponent and fixed those appendages around the guard's throat. Reinvigorated by the pain suffered, he held the other man's neck in a vice akin to that of a boa constrictor.
Under ordinary circumstances, Alpha would have allowed himself to be escorted back to his cell to await the agonizing punishment that was inevitable. But now? He couldn't afford that. Alpha was aware that escape would be nothing short of a Herculean task and he was willing to sacrifice ANYTHING to ensure that he succeeded. Even his very humanity.
That thought in mind, he tightened that grasp until he felt a sickening crunch beneath his palms. Grimly satisfied, he rose from his crouched position and broke into a breakneck sprint down the halls after lifting the guard's key card off the still-warm corpse.
Rounding a corner and forcing himself flush against the wall, Alpha had to force his breath to slow from the loud pants he made as he heard several footsteps pounding down the hallway he'd just vacated. Had they found his kill? He shook off this worrisome doubt as he clung to the wall, continuing on this journey of his.
Narrowly, he avoided making the same mistake twice as he spotted a guard before they noticed him. Luck appeared to be on Alpha’s side as he used the lifted key card to slip into the less guarded corridor that he knew was the only thing barring his way to his ever blessed destination.
His heart sped up further and anticipation of what it'd be like to taste his first lungfuls of fresh, freedom-laden air. If anyone - guard or otherwise - would happen to risk a glance of the escapee, all that their eyes would capture was a blur of fire red and pale turquoise. Upon reaching the door barricading his way, he threw the bulk of his weight into it.
The door was forced open, nearly falling off of its hinges. Alpha couldn't allow himself even a moment to catch his breath as he heard the baying of his creators’ hounds. Running as he'd never run before, the man vaulted over the barbed wire topped fence and landed soundlessly in the grass that lay on the other side. That breakneck pace was resumed as he raced for the thick cover of trees that he was certain would mask the scent and sound.
For what felt like an eternity, Alpha knew nothing but the hard, branch coated ground beneath his bare feet and the scorch of quick breaths filling his lungs. These woods appeared to be an endless expanse of brown and green. That was until he reached a dirt road that had some sort of sign on one side.
The fugitive ignored this, continuing to run although he felt lethargy seeping into his every limb. Due to this fact, Alpha had been unable to anticipate the vehicle hurtling down this road until it was too late. The driver had attempted to slam on the brakes, but didn't have enough time to avoid the man crossing the road.
They crashed into Alpha, thieving him a breath as he was sent flying forward by their momentum. He rolled several times upon impact, coming to a stop on his belly a few metres away from where the collision occurred. He lay there, the agonies of the crash and fatigue of his escape rendering him immobile.
As it were, he was having one hell of a time battling consciousness as it threatened to wash over him. He felt himself rolled onto his back, paralyzing agony lancing through him as icy blue hues landed on an unfamiliar woman's visage.
Her lips moved but the words fell far short of reaching Alpha’s ears as he could no longer keep up this war to remain conscious. Before that blackness overtook him, a mumbling of words poured past his lips.
“Don't take me back…”
