Summer is almost here that means. Parties, staying up late, walks on the beaches, shopping. It's paradise. I can see it the sun shinning not a cloud in the sky and the hot air with a gentle breeze while the waves from the ocean crash onto the shore, perfection. The cool drinks by the pool side sunglasses and tanning, like a dream. Today is the last day of school. I have 3 months of freedom ahead if me. Everyone is saying their goodbyes and saying see you when we hang out or at that party. I'm saying goodbye for a lot longer
I'm Campbell Hendrickson and this summer my parents thought it would be good for me to get me away from home for a while. I live along Lake Michigan, by the navy pier in Chicago. My mom and dad and my younger brother and 2 younger sisters all live in a huge penthouse looking out over the city and the lake. I love the city. All of the action constantly going on it's not really boring here.
Anyways, my parents are sending me to go live with my aunt and uncle in Wisconsin. I wasn't too happy about this for many reasons. 1.) I won't see my friends till school starts again. 2.) They live on a huge lake in a small town but they're house is big so I guess I can't complain too much there. 3.) It just sounded boring, like what will I do there? NOTHING! I'm not looking forward to the day I leave which is on Friday. I have one day to do whatever I want since I got out of school on a Wednesday.
Today is Friday, sadly.
"I'm ready to go Mom!" I yelled from up stairs. "I'm packed and everything!"
"Then come on we need to get going it's going to be a long drive!" She yelled back. When I went down stairs I saw my mom standing by the front door smiling at me. "I will be down in the car, so hurry up." She told me. Then she was out of the door. I waited a while before I knew that she would for sure be almost down to the garage. With nobody home it was quite and lonely in our big penthouse. The sky is a little on the darker side since it is cloudy today. I walk over to the living room where one wall that faces the lake is just a bunch of windows connected together. I'm going to miss this view.
I finally decided to head down to the parking garage since it had been 5 minutes since my mom left. By the time I got down there, which was an elevator ride past 57 floors, my mom was sitting in the drivers seat on her phone. I opened the door and threw my bag in before I went to the back to put my suitcases in.
"It took you long enough." My mom complained as I closed the door to the passenger seat.
"5 minutes and the elevator was slow." I told her.
"Well we need to get going to get there before dark." She said starting to drive out of the garage.
As soon as we got onto the highway I put my headphones in and lay back in my seat staring at the passing buildings towering over us. There shadows stretching tall and thin across the big freeway. Once we passed the Chicago area the car ride was boring and long. We made a few stops but not many. Most of the way it's farm lands and rolling hills, it's pretty at first until you are looking at them for several hours.
"Do you remember Aunt Megan and Uncle Jason?" Asked my mom keeping her eyes on the road.
"Well yeah I guess so. They came to see us a few years ago for Easter didn't they?" I replied
"Yes they did but I didn't think you would remember them that well." She went on.
When we finally reached the small town they lived on my mom stiffened in her seat a bit and drove on looking at her GPS occasionally. I'd never think if say this but the town was actually kinda nice. We kept driving through the town on the main road until out GPS said to turn right onto a road that was about a mile in a half from the town. The road was lined with trees and brush on both sides and every once in a while there would be an opening where a driveway was. We ventured down the road pretty far, twisting and turning.
