A new English translation of Beethoven's ODE TO JOY by Joel Sattler,

after the words of Schiller, based on THE NINTH SYMPHONY by Beethoven

The original words were by Friedrich Schiller,

Modified and added to by Ludwig van Beethoven.

============================

My version is not a literal translation, but is meant to be sung.

I've been working on this for almost 30 years, on and off.

It may look simple, but it was very difficult to write.

The below is the fifth draft of my new interpretation/translation:

============================

Have Joy friends!

Not these sad sorrows!

But lift voices high

And sing this song full of hope then

with joy -

And be glorious!

Joyous!

Joyous!

Joy!

Joyous!

Joy, the lightning of the Gods, the

Daughter of Elysium!

We come to you fire-drunken,

To your inner sanctuum.

With your magic reunite us,

Spite the years of suffering.

In the end we all are brothers

Safe beneath your gentle wing.

For whoever's had the gift to

Be a friend to everyone,

And for they with perfect mate, we'll

jubilate in unison.

Yes, if only for the one who

He has called here on the earth.

But whoever cannot bear it

Leave with nothing but your tears.

Joy, the thirst of all God's creatures:

Mother Nature's water spring.

All that's good and all that's evil

In her path are following.

Wine she gives us, kisses gives us,

And the friend who'd die for love.

Lust is from the Serpent but the

Holy Child was made for God!

Glad, glad,

glad that His suns are flying

Over heaven, ever so!

Hurry, brothers, full of pride!

Victors, with the joy of heros!

Be enfolded by the millions!

This, to kiss entire world!

Brethren, up beyond the night,

God's at home- where stars are birthing!

Do you bow down million millions?

Have you felt the Maker, World?
