Long Forgotten Song

There once was a girl
with golden curls
and a smile so big
she could capture the world
A heart made of gold
And soul no less than pure
Her baby blue eyes
were the cure
No matter the sickness
no matter the sadness
the life that sparked
within those blues
could lift any heart
could sing any tune
Though darkness captured her
Holding on with all its might
Touching and grabbing her
she had lost this fight
The sparkle in her eyes
quickly took flight
Where once was hope and laughter
became merely a shell
while she sat and sobbed
in her personal Hell
Years passed
as the iron grip grew stronger
She gave up at last
not wanting to go any longer
She had begun self destructing
in ways no one could understand
her mind ripping itself apart
from end to end
Her bones became frail
her hair became thin
as she partook
in every sin
The unknown laughter
the long forgotten song
surely didn't matter
They had to call and call
with no success
The darkness had shown
that it was the best
The girl is now grown
though the child remains inside
locked in a cage
for no one to find
She moves through the steps
practicing at life
Half-hearted attempts
because nothing will shine
through the fog
that hinders her sight
through the thoughts
of ending her life
And the darkness captured her
never to set her free
Another victim lost to the fight
Another girl that will never take flight
