Chapter 6

“Why can’t we start next week?” I asked mum as I got into the passenger side of the car.

“Because that would be a waste Anna, its’ already Sunday so just get on with it and quit complaining,” she gave me a stern look that told me that was the end of the conversation.

Deep breaths! I began chanting in my mind as if that could actually help. We were driving to the pet shop where I was supposed to spend two hours helping dean do chores; alone! I was doomed. How on earth was I supposed to survive two hours with a guy that openly admitted to disliking me? Was the universe trying to punish me? I never did anything wrong.

“You can get out of the car now,” mum spoke, snapping me back to reality.

“Oh,” was all I said as I carefully opened the door, stepped out and then watched mum drive away.

“I hope you don’t plan on standing there all day,” Dean said making me almost jump out of my skin.

I glared at him and then followed as he unlocked the door and walked into the store. The shelves were neat which didn’t surprise me. He led me out the back where I could hear various animals making noises. There was a small section where small animals were kept like mice, birds, rats and fish. Then there was another section where the cats were kept in cages and another which held two dogs. There weren’t any puppies, just the two dogs. One was a Labrador and the other was a Golden retreiver.

“The first thing I need you to do is let the cats out of their cages into that playroom for them,” Dean said matter-of-factly; pointing to a room that was separate from everything else.

I followed his instructions and let the cats play in the room, silently dreading when it came time to catch them and put them back into their cages. When that was done, I walked over to where Dean was playing with the dog. The pet shop had a backyard that opened out onto a park. Dean had taken both the dogs outside to play. He was throwing a ball for both dogs so they could fetch it and drop it at his feet.

He looked so unlike the Dean that I was beginning to know. He seemed so carefree and happy. He turned around as he heard me approach, a grin stretched across his face. For a moment I was captivated. His smile was the most amazing thing I had seen on any guy; ever. It was like all of the planets and the stars had collided. The most beautiful things in the world had come together to form that one smile that completely took my breath away.

“Want to play?” He asked with a sly grin throwing a ball before I had even replied.

I caught the ball easily as the Labrador ran up to me, stopping at me feet. She was black and her name was Sav. We played for a while, throwing the balls while the dogs fetched them. Sav got bored and started chasing her tail and Dean laughed at her in amusement.

It was an intoxicating sound and made my heart thud heavily in my chest. He seemed to love both of the dogs. The Golden retriever was also a female and her name was Millie. All of a sudden, Sav ran straight towards Dean and jumped on him, knocking him to the ground. She began licking at his face while he laughed and pushed her off. Standing up, he brushed the grass from his shorts and led the two dogs into the shop again.

“What do we do now?” I asked, worried that he would revert back to his usual cold self.

“You’re going to help me bath them both now.”
