Chapter 1
It was like I hadn’t even woken up. I could tell my eyes were open, but my brain refused to take anything in. The images in front of me were all blurry messes; blobs of stuff that mashed together at the edges, like a painting of watercolors with too much water. And I couldn’t hear anything but the buzz of the air, a bee flying near my ear. Odd sensations would erupt throughout my body, like a warm feeling here and hard hand there. Red would flash before my eyes more than any color, green too. But I didn’t know what any of it meant.... I didn’t know anything.
I don’t know how long I stayed like that, completely immobile and at their mercy. Who’s mercy? Might you ask. I have no clue, but I knew I was like silly putty in their hand. They could stretch and bend me anyway they wanted, and there wasn’t anything I could do.
I felt a shiver run through my back as my head lolled to the side. There were no more colors, just muddy gray. The hum was gone and I heard nothing. Not a single thing. It was as if I had gone deaf, because no matter how quiet it ever was, there was always some kind of noise. Whether it’s far away or secretly hiding behind you. It could be car down your street, a purring sound that’s barely there, yet it still reaches your ears. The absence of noise was a fantasy for those who could hear. I know I should be scared at the prospect that I might have lost my hearing, but like I said, nothing was making sense.
Maybe I really was sleeping. Maybe I was in dream land, wherever that was. Because what else could explain this situation? What else could be happening to me? I think I had drifted off to sleep a couple times....I still can’t tell.
I know I fell asleep at least once though, because I just woke up. I could see things now, like how the muddy gray is just a dirty wall. The shiver that had travelled through my back had been the cold, because I was lying on a freezing surface. I felt slight tremors rock through the ground and I could hear bangs echoing in my ears. And most of all, I could understand again.........because I was absolutely terrified....
“Throw it” he said, as he handed me a tomato. I stared at it, was he crazy? There was no way in hell I was doing that. I glared at him,
“No!” I hissed as I thrust it back into his hand. He glared at me back, “Do it!”
People around me were laughing, everyone pointing and throwing to the center of the cafeteria. Cheers erupted when a flying piece of food hit its target.
“You can’t make me!” I whispered furiously. Then I turned away once again, ready to march into the middle and finally stop this madness. But before I had even taken my first step, his hand latched onto my arm and yanked me back. I opened my mouth, prepared to scream but his hand covered me, sealing my lips. I shivered as his breath covered my ear.
“I know his secret and I swear to god, I will tell everyone” his promise filled voice made me freeze and my eyes widen in fear. “But, if you do as I say, then my I’ll stay quiet”.
My heart thudded painfully as soda was poured over the head of the boy in the middle of the cafeteria. His eyes had tears that refused to fall, his arms barely making an effort anymore to block the food. Then he lifted his head from the cradle of his hands, and noticed me. His chocolate eyes begging me to save him, to help. I could only look at him in horror of what I would have to do next.
“Throw it” he repeated from behind. My hands shook as I took the fruit, my arm wobbly as I lifted. The boy in the middle looked at my occupied hand, his eyes growing larger as the puzzle pieces began to fit. He looked like a deer stuck in headlights, tears of despair building higher under his eyelids.
