FLAME

I watch as her eyes glistened in anger and frustration. I had just broken up with Snowflake today and I had enough on my plate. I was tired and I wasn't ready to deal with this.

"You need to calm down. I can feel your fear of such new experiences and-"

Before I can complete my statement, she has me pinned against the wall. Her forearm pressed against my collarbone. She was freakishly strong but then again, she isn't human.

"Don't! Don't you ever call me scared!" her pupils dilate in anger.

She releases me and steps back, "Tell me everything."

I nod and pinch the bridge of my nose.

"You're special, Kiana. Very special. You aren't human, not of this world."

"But, but how?"

"A week after you were born, according to the legend that is, your mother sent you away to this world."

"Why?"

"To protect you."

"Protect me? Protect me from what?"

"From the monsters."

"Monsters. Monsters like those creatures."

Her reply was more of a statement than a question. Her voice was barely above a whisper. She stares at her hands as if searching. Searching for the truth. For a way out of this nightmare. For a way for all this to end, for all of this to be some big joke. She slowly sits on the floor with her legs crossed, apple-sauce style. She looks up. Her eyes vacant of any emotion, her expression blank. She was fighting. Fighting her emotions. Fighting the fear, the truth. Fighting herself. I've met girls like her. Stubborn girls, too smart for their own good.

"Kiana," I move towards her.

"Don't touch me."

That is all she says before getting up and walking out.

It's been a week since Kiana came to meet me for the truth. I haven't seen her since then. I was in a tree, near her school, Oakwood High. Just then I heard humans and I hid in the leaves. It was her and her friends. A human had his arm casually slung over her shoulders.

"We should go roller skating." One says

"Nah, we should go to a football game."

"How about we go to the beach for a week."

"Good idea, I could finally get a girlfriend."

"Ew Alex! No girl would ever date you!"

As they talked and laughed, they approached the tree I was in and scattered themselves under it. Thankfully, none looked up. I shift my weight unto a slightly stronger branch, silently. They continue with their cheerful chatter that is until Kiana stops and asks a question.

"Did you guys hear something?"

They all stopped and looked around. I quickly made myself invisible. Kiana looked up and for a moment, as she squinted into the leaves, directly at me, I was scared she had seen me. I held my breath and remained still.

"It was probably nothing. Just Kiana and her super natural hearing."

She looks on suspiciously at me before slowly turning away.

"Yeah, she probably heard an ant sneeze or a spider taking a dump."

They all laughed and left the area. I sighed in relief and made myself visible again. Now that she's come into my life. I don't think she'll be leaving anytime soon.
