I'm back today with a fluffy floofy Kai one-shot! 🎉🎊 And without further ado...here it is!
After applying on the last traces of my lipstick and sweeping my hair behind my ears, I grabbed my purse and rushed downstairs. After months of trying to hint to Jongdae that I liked him, he had finally gotten the hint and asked me out! I had been anticipating this occasion for what seemed like eons, so I had put my utmost effort into making myself look beautiful on this special occasion. Jongdae and I had agreed that he would pick me up at my house at half past seven in the evening. But as minutes ticked by and turned into hours, I became certain that he had forgotten to come. Biting my nails anxiously, I glanced at my phone where a message that I had sent Jongdae two hours ago lay unread. Sighing, I trudged up to my bedroom and regretfully appraised my done-up appearance in the mirror. It was disappointing to think that I had placed so much priority on our date when Jongdae had clearly not cared enough to remember.
However, just as I had begun to take out my earrings, the doorbell rung. An elated grin teased at the corners of my lips. How had I lost faith in Jongdae; of course he had not forgotten about me! Elated, I swung open the door only to find, not Jongdae but… “Kai?”
He tilted his head up from a game on his phone to behold me with a complacent smirk. “Jongdae had an arrangement, so he asked me to take his place today.” He stated in response to my dazed expression.
Stunned at Jongdae’s nerve, I laughed and shook my head in denial. “Ah, Jongin, it’s alright. Even though he’s your hyung, you shouldn’t let him order you around all the time. It’s already almost midnight, so why don’t you-” I was cut off by his strong hand seizing my wrist and practically dragging me outside. Ignoring my pleas, Jongin unceremoniously dumped me into his car and placed the key in the ignition.
“Jongin, where are you taking me?” I asked, trying to push away the nagging feeling that I was being kidnapped. “The dance studio”, he growled with annoyance at my curiosity. “I’m going to be teaching you the choreography to Monster.” Although I was perplexed, I nodded, attempting to keep up with the unexpected turn of events.
As soon as we reached the SM Entertainment building, Jongin quickly ushered me inside and jumped right into teaching me the routine. But although he patiently demonstrated the same dance move for me multiple times, I continually failed to execute it properly. After about half an hour of my failed attempts, his former soothing words of encouragement transformed into sharp, caustic insults.
“Why can’t you do it right? It’s so simple!” He yelled, incensed.
“I don't know what you expected from me, Kai! I'm not even a dancer.” I retorted indignantly, wondering why I was complying with Jongin’s demands. But somewhere along the way, I became devoted to completing the task before me. Gradually under Kai’s strict guidance, I began to perfect the complex choreography.
“No, you have to move your hips more flexibly during this part,” Kai murmured, his hands drifting lower to rest on my hips as he indicated how to properly perform an intricate part of the dance. Flustered, I became self-conscious of the proximity of our bodies as his hot breath tickled my ear. Pushing his hands away, I tried to convince myself that the slight quickening of my heartbeat just now was merely a figment of my imagination.
‘You have feelings for Chen’, my conscience whispered, attempting to remind me of my morals. But I could not resist my eyes from being drawn back to Kai’s tempting profile as he leaned against the wall, running a carefree hand through his hair. Making a renewed effort to ignore my desirous feelings, I started to dance again, but this time with double the energy.
However, just as the final bars of the music were coming to a close, the worst happened: I tripped on my untied shoelaces and abruptly fell to the floor. Kai immediately rushed toward me with concern plain in his eyes.
“Is your ankle alright?” He inquired, placing a steady hand on my shoulder.
“Um, I’m not sure. I think I may have strained it.” I replied dejectedly, a cloud of gloom settling over me.
“Here, let’s get you up,” Kai said, but I barely heard his comment, for, wallowing in despair, I was recounting the unfortunate events of my day. First, Jongdae abandoned me on our date, and then Jongin dragged me out of my house past midnight to teach me, of all things, the Monster choreography. And to top it off, I had just possibly sprained my ankle. I highly doubted whether my day could get much worse.
Breaking out of my reverie, I flicked my eyes up for a moment, only to find Jongin’s face merely inches away from my own. At the realization of our intimate position, my cheeks immediately exploded with color. I squeezed my eyes shut tightly, trying to control the rhythm of my rebellious heart. Was he going to...kiss me? A small smile graced my lips as my imagination ran wild. But the next thing I felt was not a kiss, but myself being hoisted into Kai’s arms bridal style, cradled against his chest.
“You should go home and rest your leg”, he chided gently, taking extra care not to bump my leg against anything as he proceeded to take me home.
Suddenly, as Kai helped me into my house, I began to see him in a different light. From a bystander's point of view, Kai had an icy and standoffish personality, but given time, his soft and gentlemanly interior became apparent. All thought of Jongdae absent from my mind, I began to wonder why I had never fully appreciated Kai before.
“I'm sorry. It's my fault for being so pushy.” Kai murmured with his head lowered. He had grown used to the mature image he had to maintain as an idol, so it took some effort to drop his “tough guy” act and reveal that he sincerely cared.
“It's fine, Jongin.” I replied, tussling his hair affectionately. “Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.” After propping my injured foot up onto the sofa, Kai let himself out and headed back to his car. While he drove away, I watched until the car’s silhouette became a speck in the distance. Of course today’s date was not the ideal one I had in mind, but my late night adventure with Kai had definitely been enjoyable.
