I regret agreeing to come to this party. If you could even call it a party. It was more like an awkward blind date. Four barely legal college kids getting drunk at the nearby lake doesn't really count as a party. My friend Cathy was crushing hard out on this guy, Brandon, from her night class so she wanted an excuse to get into his pants but didn't want to be alone in case things went south. So that's why I'm here, along with Brandon's friend Jessica. She was nice. If the standard for nice was the devil herself. She's a nightmare. I barely even opened my mouth and she was talking about feminism. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally a feminist, woman rights all the way! But not quite like Jessica was. She rambled on about how some guy opened a door for her once and how it was completely sexist. I tuned out as soon as I could.
Cathy and Brandon where in the water. They were laughing while chugging down beer and splashing water at each other. I looked down at my own can of cheap beer and grimaced. I know I owed Cathy one but I'm having a really shitty night. I just wanted to go home and crawl into bed and watch the finale of Stranger Things. But I know I can't. Cathy and I weren't that close before I started to live with her. We knew each other in high school, although not best friends. After getting kicked out of college I knew I had to crash somewhere and I couldn't go back to my step-mum, I just couldn't.
"Leo, are you even listening to me?" Jessica said, punching my arm
"Ah, yeah of course I am,"
Jessica rolled her eyes. "Ugh, your so boring. Why do I always get the boring ones."
"Hmm I wonder," I said sarcastically.
Jessica looked annoyed. She did this sort of huffing noise that reminded me of a horse. She stumbled to her feet, clearly tipsy. She walking to the edge of the water, stripping off her shirt to reveal her lacy pink bra underneath.
"Hope you got room for three, I'm coming in." Jessica yelled, disturbing the two hump buddies.
Cathy gave me a look and I just shrugged, giving up as Jessica waddled into the water practically wailing at how cold it was. I stayed by the water line with my cheap beer and watched them. In a matter of minutes the three of them were giggling and making out with each other. I'll agreed that it would be better leave before I have to witness their threesome. I looked up at the stars, they glowed so bright away from the city. There are so many.
I feel goosebumps along my skin and a shiver down my spine. A rustling of the bushes has my head spina to look out into the deep dark forest behind me. I could feel eyes watching me. Yet I did not know from where or from whom. Did I dare investigate or did I leave it as a figment of my imagination?
A scream had my eyes darting back to the lake. Jessica and Brandon clung to each other like glue but Cathy was nowhere to be seen. The once calm water was disturbed by something below the surface. Jessica cries out terrified while Brandon whimpers like a dog.
"Something touched my foot, something touched it!" He cried.
I ran into the shallows, looking at them in concern. "What happened? Where's Cathy?"
"I don't know man, something dragged her underwater!"
The water starts to form waves and the forest goes silent. I start to get a bad feeling in my gut, like something bad was gonna happen. "Guys, get out of the water. Go now!"
I said this as loud as I could, trying to get them to move but they were frozen in fear. Brandon started to shake, his eyes going wide. "My foot-"
He was cut off, his entire being dragged into the water by some unknown force. Jessica screamed, swimming to the shore, completely abandoning him. I acted quickly, ridding myself of my shirt and diving into the water. I drive quite deep but it was useless, the water was pitch black. I swim back up to the surface as quickly as I could. I wiped at my eyes, trying to get a visual of the shore. Yet all I could see was a head bobbing out of the water. Cathy! I was about to swim to her but an eel like created swims across the surface of the water in front of me. Yet it wasn't a eel at all, it had suction cups along its skin. It was a tentacle! I look to my right, seeing the lake monster for the first time. A giant octopus with the face- the face of a woman? I had never seen anything like it. Yet I had no time to admire or to even be afraid. For it lifted its tentacle ready to strike down upon Cathy!
"Cathy, swim away!" I yelled, swimming as fast as I could to get to her side.
I managed to get to her but all that did was put me in the way of the giant tentacle. It wrapped around me in a vice grip. The last thing I saw was Cathy's terrified face before I was dragged underwater and into the dark abyss. I was shaken around for a while before I was slammed against a rock. I hit my head hard, yet I'm not sure if I blanked out as the water around me was just as dark and void-like as my the blankness of my mind.In the dark depths of Lake Greenwood, Leo was barely conscious.
